General Description:
The Library Assistant provides excellent customer service to library patrons and supports the daily operation of the library. Responsibilities include circulation services, assisting patrons with library resources and technology, supporting library programs and events, maintaining library collections, and promoting library services. The position works under the direct supervision of the Library Director and will be required to work some evenings and Saturdays on a rotating schedule.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Provide courteous and professional customer service to patrons, staff, and volunteers. Perform circulation functions including checking materials in and out, registering patrons, updating patron records, processing holds, and collecting fees for lost or damaged materials. Assist patrons in locating and using library materials, databases, digital resources, and technology. Answer directional and basic reference questions and refer complex inquiries to the Library Director. Shelve, organize, and maintain library materials according to established library procedures. Conduct shelf-reading and assist with collection maintenance projects. Assist patrons with basic use of public computers, printing, copying, faxing, laminating, mobile devices, online catalogs, digital resources, and other library technology. Assist with the planning, promotion, and delivery of library programs, outreach activities, and special events. Set up and break down rooms, equipment, and materials for library programs and community meetings. Assist with promoting library services, programs, and events through social media and other communication channels. Perform opening and closing procedures. Maintain records, patron information, and Town-related materials in accordance with applicable Town policies, public records requirements, and confidentiality standards. Assist with town-sponsored events and community engagement activities. Monitor public areas and assist in maintaining a welcoming, safe, and orderly library environment. Explain and apply library policies and procedures in a courteous and consistent manner. Report facility, safety, security, or patron conduct concerns to the Library Director. Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic library procedures, circulation practices, and customer service principles. Ability to assist patrons of varying ages, backgrounds, and technology skill levels. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion. Ability to handle routine cash or fee transactions accurately. Ability to de-escalate routine patron concerns independently. Ability to learn library software, online catalog systems, databases, and digital lending platforms.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, internet applications, and common office equipment. Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work collaboratively in a small-team environment. Completion of National Incident Management System IS-100 and IS-700 training within six months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two years of library, customer service, clerical, educational, or public-sector experience. Experience with an integrated library system, public computers, printers/copiers, digital resources, or library programming.
Essential Physical and Movement Requirement:
The employee is regularly required to: Stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, grasp, and use hands and fingers to handle library materials, office equipment, technology devices, and program supplies. Move throughout the library facility to assist patrons, retrieve and shelve materials, monitor public areas, support programs, and perform opening and closing procedures. Reach above shoulder level, below waist level, and across shelving units to retrieve, shelve, shift, and organize books, media, and other library materials. Push, pull, and maneuver loaded and unloaded book carts, supply carts, and program materials within the library facility. Lift, carry, place, and rearrange books, boxes, program materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds. Use stepstools or similar equipment, when necessary and in accordance with safety procedures, to access materials or supplies located on higher shelves. Perform repetitive hand, wrist, and arm movements associated with keyboarding, scanning materials, shelving books, processing library materials, and assisting patrons with office and library equipment. Operate a computer, telephone, copier, printer, scanner, fax machine, laminator, cash drawer or payment device if applicable, and other standard library or office equipment. Read printed materials, labels, computer screens, forms, instructions, and patron records. Communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and in writing with patrons, staff, volunteers, vendors, and the general public. Set up, take down, arrange, and move tables, chairs, displays, program supplies, signage, and equipment for library programs, meetings, outreach activities, and Town-sponsored events. The employee may occasionally be required to: Work outdoors or in non-library settings during Town-sponsored events, outreach activities, or community programs. Stand or walk for extended periods during programs, events, or busy service periods. Assist with light cleaning, straightening, and organizing of public service areas, program spaces, and work areas. Respond to routine facility, safety, or patron-service needs within the scope of the position and promptly report concerns to the Library Director.
Emergency Conditions:
This position is required to assist with emergency support functions in the event of a declared emergency and/or any other emergency duties as assigned.
Environmental Conditions:
Work is performed primarily in a public library environment with frequent interaction with patrons, staff, volunteers, children, families, and members of the general public. The employee may experience moderate noise levels, frequent interruptions, competing service requests, and periods of high public activity. Work may also include occasional participation in programs, outreach activities, community meetings, or Town-sponsored events held outside normal library service areas. The position may require evening and Saturday work on a rotating schedule.
