Youth Services Associate Salary $18.10 Hourly Location Library, ND Job Type Library Positions Job Number 202600047 Department Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library Opening Date 05/01/2026 Closing Date 5/20/2026 11:59 PM Central FLSA Non-Exempt Description Benefits Questions Job Description This posting is for one (1) part-time position for 20 hours/week, scheduled for 3 days a week (Monday morning, Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday evening, and Friday morning) and every sixth weekend. This is a part-time position with primary duties consisting of providing direct assistance to the public at the Children's Information Desk. Also assists with carrying out Youth Services Department operations, assigned tasks, and special departmental projects. Examples of Duties 1. Performs telephone and walk-in reference for Youth Services, primarily assisting children and families, and also assisting teens as required. 2. May assist supervisor in creating, planning, developing, and promoting programming for youth. 3. May assist with production of weekly story times and present other children's programs. 4. May assist with displays in the Children's Library. 5. May shelve or shelf-read books. 6. May assist in creating informational materials for children and parents. 7. Communicates library policies and procedures. 8. Keeps informed of children's literature. 9. Assists individuals with using the online library catalog and indexes. 10. Conducts tours of the Children's Library. 11. Performs other duties of a comparable level/type as required. Minimum Qualifications Two years of satisfactory work experience with children or teens (equivalent life experiences). High school diploma or GED. Supplemental Information Four-year college degree preferred. Must have an outgoing personality and ability to assist patrons in a friendly, confident, and self-assured manner. Must be able to resolve complaints through careful negotiation and flexibility to fulfill the spirit of library policies without causing unwanted client/user dissatisfaction. Must be able to get along with fellow employees and Library patrons. Must be able to listen to patrons and accurately determine their requests. Must be able to master detailed procedures and to follow instructions. Must be able to adapt to flexible scheduling, including mornings, afternoons, evenings and periodic weekends. Must have demonstrated proficiency utilizing computer hardware and software. Must be able to understand and operate library computer systems and equipment, and research databases. Must support public libraries as necessary institutions that uphold the right to diverse flow of information, ideas, and intellectual freedom. Must affirm and uphold the Library Bill of Rights and Freedom to Read Statement (American Library Association, first published 1953), and oppose efforts to censor or remove material from the library. Must adhere to the library's Dress Code Policy and maintain proper personal hygiene. Must carry oneself with an attitude of professionalism and integrity with all library stakeholders, including the general public and fellow library employees. Must be able to work under busy conditions that may cause stress. Must be able to perform basic keyboarding. Must be able to alphabetize and shelve books. Must be able to push a fully loaded book cart, shelve books to a height of 6 feet and lift 25 pounds of books at a time. Must be able to assist with programming as needed.
