Job Description

Job Summary:
The Technology Assistant reports to the Electronic Resources Librarian. The job provides reliable and responsive support of computers, peripherals, public Internet access and print management and RFID hardware. The job liaises with City IT staff and vendor technical support. The job provides support for the audiovisual system for all locations. The position will also provide setup and takedown of AV equipment such as laptops, digital camera, and digital projector and microphones.
Primary Responsibilities Scope of Responsibility:
The Technology Assistant reports to the Electronic Resources Librarian. The job provides support of various hardware and software at three library locations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists in the continual support and maintenance of library hardware and software. Installs and troubleshoots public workstations Maintains and troubleshoots time management and print management software Installs and troubleshoots RFID hardware and software In coordination with the Electronic Resources Librarian serves as a liaison to City IT and software vendors Maintains and troubleshoots meeting room technologies to include set up and take down Instructs library patrons and staff in the utilization of library technologies. Provides classroom training as well as one-on-one training Provides direct patron assistance when requested by library staff Participates in special projects or teams as required Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions. Frequently interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors and across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised. Interaction with the public, vendors or across departments occasionally includes negotiations involving convincing the other party to do something to achieve a basic work-related objective. Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions. Frequently interacts with others in the work unit, the public, vendors and across departments to exchange detailed and/or technical information where the ability to explain concepts is exercised. Interaction with the public, vendors or across departments occasionally includes negotiations involving convincing the other party to do something to achieve a basic work-related objective. Maintains various records relating to work unit activities, etc. and prepares statistical reports regarding such information as required. Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices. Knows and follows department and city rules as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss; Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work; When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, reports condition, address within scope of responsibility, and refers to supervisor and/or necessary authority in a timely manner. Performs other duties and activities as assigned. When an emergency declaration has been made by City of Fargo administration, performs duties as required by the Incident Commander for the duration of need.
Duties may require:
Work in locations other than standard library locations Work outside of standard library hours of operations Work with physical requirements beyond that of regular library functions, if able. Minimum Qualifications The job requires an associate's degree in a related field and three or more years of related customer contact experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Certifications such as A+, MCITP or related will be considered. Knowledge, skills and abilities include: Knowledge of desktop computer hardware and basic repair; Knowledge of Microsoft Windows as well as software such as web browsers and plugins, PDF readers and media players; Knowledge of computer peripherals such as printers, monitors and barcode scanners as well as ability to become competent with specialized peripherals such as RFID hardware. Familiarity with presentation technologies including microphones, computer projectors and cameras; Knowledge of computer networking infrastructure; Prefer some knowledge of large computer deployments such as labs and the associated infrastructure; Skill in organization and prioritizing work assignments; Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms, and have strong customer service and public relations skills. Physical Demands Work involves considerable variety and light to medium physical demands. Daily work involves frequent handling, lifting, carrying, and moving of library materials and computer equipment; extensive computer and phone use and frequent moving between buildings and rooms, and regular local driving. The work involves computer installations that require crouching, kneeling, and reaching. There is regular attention to detail and deadlines. Overnight travel may be required. Work involves intermittent exposure to hazards associated with working the general public, including but not limited to pests, bodily fluids, and illegal substances. The position may involve intermittent exposure to members of the public who exhibit behaviors associated with mental illness and/or substance abuse. The position may also involve intermittent exposure to individuals who are emotionally unstable and may threaten or harass staff. Activities include stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions.
Light Work :
Physical demands are normally those associated with light work: Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; but at times the demands are associated with medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly. Some requirements in this job description may exclude individuals who pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of themselves or other employees.
