Evenings/Summer:
A library assistant works under a librarian to facilitate daily operations, manage circulation, and assist visitors. Primary duties include checking books in and out, processing library cards, shelving materials, and answering patron inquiries. A comprehensive job description generally includes the following core components:
Key Responsibilities Circulation Desk:
Process check-ins and check-outs, register new patrons, collect fines or fees, and manage interlibrary loans.
Collection Maintenance:
Sort and re-shelve returned items, organize book stacks, and inspect books for damage.
Patron Assistance:
Answer general questions in person or over the phone, assist visitors in locating materials, and provide basic technical support for computers and printers.
Administrative Support:
Maintain files and records, stock library supplies, and assist with special events or programs (like book clubs or story times).
Qualifications & Skills Education:
Typically requires a high school diploma or GED. Some specialized or academic roles may require an associate's degree.
Customer Service:
Strong interpersonal skills with a courteous, helpful, and professional demeanor.
Technical Skills:
Basic computer proficiency and the ability to navigate digital library databases and cataloging systems.
Organization:
High attention to detail for categorizing books and maintaining a neat environment. Physical Requirements Frequently standing, walking, bending, and reaching. The ability to lift and carry moderate weights. Pushing or pulling heavy, wheeled book carts.
