Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Director of Instruction, REAL Journey Academies is committed to maximizing student achievement for all learners through data-driven decision-making, intentional collaboration, ongoing professional development, the implementation of a high-quality core curriculum, and innovative, evidence-based instructional practices. At the elementary level, we prioritize building strong mathematical foundations, conceptual understanding, and student confidence in problem-solving. We believe every student has the capacity to learn and thrive, and that teachers play a critical role in fostering that growth. Guided by an entrepreneurial mindset that informs all aspects of our work, the Elementary Math Specialist will provide network-wide support to strengthen elementary mathematics instruction. This role focuses on developing foundational math skills, supporting differentiated instruction, enhancing engagement, and ensuring alignment to standards and curriculum. The TOSA will work closely with teachers to build instructional capacity, implement effective strategies, and drive improved student outcomes across all REAL Journey Academies elementary schools.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead the adoption and implementation of math curriculum across TK-12, including core, intervention, and supplemental programs. Support the understanding and consistent use of REAL Journey Academies-selected math curricula, instructional methods, and assessments by all stakeholders (teachers, school leaders, coaches, families, etc.). Develop, revise, and maintain curriculum and supporting documents to align with current academic standards, math pedagogy, and network-wide pacing expectations. Collaborate with teacher leaders to create and refine standards-based pacing guides and common assessments for mid-year and end-of-year benchmarks at each grade level. Assist in the design, communication, and implementation of instructional protocols for core, intervention, and enrichment math courses. Model exemplary, evidence-based mathematics instruction and provide high-impact support through coaching, professional learning, and collaborative planning. Monitor, track, and analyze student achievement data regularly to inform instructional planning and program improvements. Facilitate data-driven collaboration with administrators, teachers, instructional coaches, and department chairs to review and respond to diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data. Actively participate in weekly Curriculum & Instruction team meetings and collaborate with TOSAs across content areas and specialties. Partner with the Curriculum & Instruction Team to design and deliver the network-wide professional development calendar, including summer pre-service training and support for new and returning staff. Lead and support professional learning aligned to high-priority mathematics initiatives, including facilitation of New Teacher Induction Program sessions. Promote and support a culture of innovation and continuous improvement informed by the entrepreneurial mindset that guides REAL Journey Academies. Support school sites in planning family engagement events to build understanding of math instruction and increase parent/guardian involvement in student learning. Serve as a communication and collaboration resource for site and network-level stakeholders, including administrators, teacher leaders, instructional assistants, families, and external partners. Demonstrate professionalism, initiative, and a positive attitude in all responsibilities as a representative of REAL Journey Academies. Maintain compliance with state standards for competent and ethical performance in education. Perform other duties as assigned in support of network goals.Desired Skills and Traits:
Minimum of 3 years of successful experience teaching mathematics at the elementary and/or secondary level. Deep foundational knowledge of research-based mathematics instruction and evidence-based practices. Strong understanding of the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and Standards for Mathematical Practice. Skilled in data analysis to inform instructional planning, progress monitoring, and continuous improvement. Experience implementing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to address diverse learner needs. Proficiency in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and differentiated instruction strategies. Assessment literate, with experience designing, administering, and interpreting a range of formative and summative assessments. Demonstrated success in developing and facilitating high-quality professional learning experiences for educators. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, school leaders, and network administrators to drive systems-level instructional change. Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills; able to maintain positive relationships with diverse stakeholders. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Effective time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment M inimumRequirements:
Holds a valid California teaching credential with an authorization in mathematics or relevant subject area. Prior leadership experience in mathematics-related initiatives or cross-site instructional projects.
