This full-time position will support students in grades TK-8 who need additional assistance in reading and mathematics. The Academic Interventionist will provide targeted, data-driven instruction to help students build foundational skills, close learning gaps, and grow in confidence. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of the Science of Reading, effective math intervention strategies, and experience working with diverse learners. This individual will work closely with classroom teachers, support staff, and administration to ensure all students are making meaningful academic progress. St. Joseph Catholic School is a Catholic school located on the east side of Des Moines and is part of the Des Moines Diocesan Region. Primary Job Duties Provide targeted small-group and one-on-one intervention in reading and mathematics based on student data and identified needs Implement evidence-based instructional practices, including strategies aligned to the Science of Reading Support foundational literacy skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) and core math concepts Collaborate with classroom teachers to align intervention supports with core instruction Use assessment data to identify student needs, monitor progress, and adjust instruction accordingly Assist in developing and implementing intervention plans for students Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate updates with staff and families as appropriate Participate in PLC meetings and contribute to discussions around student achievement and growth Support classroom differentiation and provide instructional strategies for teachers when needed Build positive relationships with students to foster confidence, motivation, and a growth mindset Uphold and model Catholic values and actively support the mission of the school Qualifications Valid Iowa teaching license required Preferred endorsement or strong background in Reading and/or Mathematics Training and/or experience in the Science of Reading required Prior experience in academic intervention or working with struggling learners preferred Strong understanding of child development and differentiated instruction Ability to analyze student data and use it to drive instruction Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills Commitment to Catholic education and willingness to support the faith life of the school Preferred Skills & Attributes Experience working with students with diverse learning needs, including those with IEPs or learning differences Knowledge of structured literacy practices and effective math intervention programs Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and across grade levels Flexible, proactive, and student-centered approach to instruction Why Join St. Joseph Catholic School St. Joseph Catholic School is a faith- and family-centered school dedicated to creating a supportive and engaging learning environment for all students.
