MATH COACH
Math coaches are responsible for guiding the implementation of the math programs and curriculum, and supporting math instruction, in collaboration with teachers and administrators. Reports to STEM Director and Building Principal Duties include but are not limited to the following. Additions and modifications to these representative duties and responsibilities are under the purview of the Superintendent of Schools, the STEM Director and the Building Principal. Professional Development a.

Attend all scheduled professional development programs, including teacher training and math coach training sessions. b.

Coach/mentor classroom teachers in the various aspects of differentiated, small-group instruction, including use of student assessments to group students, classroom management for effective small-group instruction, development of constructive, group and individual activities for students when they are not with the classroom teacher, and differentiation instruction and individual activities to meet specific student needs. c.

Provide informal feedback to teachers during coaching on teaching effectiveness and insure currency in best practices in mathematics instruction. d.

Suggest ways to differentiate mathematics instruction, especially related to strategies for working with struggling students, advanced students, English language learners, and others with special needs within the regular classroom. e.

Establish and oversee a peer mentoring support network for teachers as they implement recommended instructional practices; include opportunities for teachers to visit one another's classrooms to observe the implementation of specified practices. f.

Design school-based professional development consistent with district and school initiatives and is analytic, reflective, and inquiry-oriented (e.g. site-based content knowledge workshops on strategies aligned with scientifically based reading research); lead monthly study groups in common planning time (or equivalent scheduled time) to discuss the research; share experiences on implementing recommended practices, and examine student work. g.

Suggest instructional resources and materials (e.g. videos, professional books) to support and extend professional development site-based opportunities. h.

Act as catalyst for building a school learning community that focuses on integrated learning, building connections across grades and content areas. i.

Establish clear goals for professional development that are consistent with the district mathematics plan. j.

Assist teachers in formulating their own goals for professional development. 1.Student Assessment a.

Coach teachers as they analyze mathematics assessment data to identify students who are making adequate progress or those in need of substantive intervention b.

Coach teachers on the use of assessment data to modify instruction for individual students and to group students for classroom instruction (e.g. homogeneous groups) 2.Curriculum and Instruction a.

Review materials under consideration for purchase for evidence of alignment with the district mathematics plan's perspectives on explicit, sequential instruction in the five targeted dimensions b.

Analyze instruction, suggest and model effective strategies, and provide clear guidance on strategy implementation 3.School Liaison a.

Assist in the analysis of school-wide mathematics strengths and weaknesses and formulate plans to improve student achievement in mathematics and teaching effectiveness. b.

Create an atmosphere of trust and collaboration among staff to promote professional growth and accelerate the reading achievement of all students. c.

Attend all professional development and networking meetings designed for mathematics coaches or designated by the district 4.Mathematics Coach Role in the School a)The mathematics coach is not part of school management and does not participate in any way in the evaluation of teacher performance. His/her role is to help teachers meet the goals for student progress set by the district, the principal, and the faculty as a whole. b)The mathematics coach will meet privately with teachers to plan lessons and assess student progress, perform demonstration lessons and do side-by-side teaching, organize assessments, upload, download, and organize assessment data, and meet with grade-level teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • A valid Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure in Mathematics at the appropriate level and SEI endorsement
  • A minimum of 5 years teaching experience
  • Possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree
  • High level of comfort working in a growth-focused coaching environment based on frequent observations, debriefs, action planning, and progress monitoring
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent computer/technology skills with the ability to utilize various computer software and app programs
  • Committed to the vision of high expectations for achievement, equal access to high levels of instruction, the achievement of academic and linguistic proficiency for all students, and the closing of the opportunity gap
  • A self-reflective, active learner capable of interactive dialogue with all members of the school community
  • Ability to properly manage confidential information
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and respect for others with the ability to establish rapport with and relate to students, caregivers, and coworkers with respect, compassion, tact and understanding
