Position Summary Learning Assistants (LAs) in
MATH 1065
support a collaborative, student-centered learning environment grounded in Problem-Based Learning ( PBL). LAs facilitate group discussions, promote mathematical reasoning, guide students through real-world problem scenarios, and assist the instructor in implementing activelearning strategies. Any major may apply, and LAs work 5-10 hours per week with a pay rate of $10•12 per hour per semester, depending on responsibilities. This role emphasizes coaching, questioning, and supporting student thinking rather than lecturing or providing answers directly. The position is especially valuable for students interested in teaching or education-related careers, offering meaningful experience in classroom support and facilitation. Key Responsibilities 1. Facilitate PBL Group Work Support students as they engage in structured PBL tasks and multi-step problem scenarios. Encourage productive struggle by asking guiding questions rather than giving solutions. Help groups articulate reasoning, analyze patterns, and justify algebraic methods. Monitor group dynamics and ensure equitable participation. 2. Promote Mathematical Thinking Use inquiry-based prompts to deepen conceptual understanding of algebraic topics. Help students connect real-world PBL contexts to formal mathematical principles. Assist peers in interpreting, modeling, and solving complex problems within each PBL unit. 3. Provide In-Class Instructional Support Circulate during class to offer assistance to students and groups. Support students in understanding feedback from previous PBL activities. Collaborate with the instructor to guide students through weekly learning goals. 4. Attend Required Meetings and Training Participate in weekly prep meetings with the instructor to review upcoming PBL modules. Discuss instructional strategies, reflect on classroom experiences, and prepare for facilitation tasks. Complete any required LA pedagogy workshops or professional development sessions. 5. Support Learning Outside of Class (If Applicable) Hold or support office hours, tutoring sessions, or help labs centered on PBL content. Provide students with study techniques that align with activelearning algebra practices. 6. Maintain Professionalism and Classroom Culture Serve as a positive academic role model and uphold expectations for respectful collaboration. Communicate with students using inclusive, supportive, and student-focused language. Maintain confidentiality regarding student progress and performance. Time Commitment Typically, 5-10 hours per week, depending on assigned responsibilities. Time includes in-class support, prep meetings, and potential tutoring hours. Learning Outcomes for LAs LAs will develop: Skills in teaching, communication, and collaborative facilitation. Deeper conceptual mastery of college algebra. Experience with student-centered pedagogy and educational best practices. Leadership qualities that enhance academic and professional pathways. Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.) Required Qualifications Successful completion of
MATH 1065
(or higher mathematics course) with a C or better. Solid conceptual understanding of algebraic functions, modeling, and problem-solving processes. Interest in collaborative learning, education, and student success. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience with tutoring, PBL, inquiry-based learning, or mentoring. Comfort facilitating group discussions and supporting diverse learners.
