This approach trains students to use the Socratic Method and inquiry approach to learning while leveraging their unique skills and talents in an equitable and democratic manner to create a positive culture where all students can find success.
Position Goals :
This position collaborates with the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment (CIA) Team to increase achievement and engagement of all students in elementary mathematics (K-5) while building teacher capacity. The incumbent will implement research-based math instructional frameworks through mentoring and coaching and assist teachers with planning, classroom strategies, and best practices aligned to elementary math development. Odyssey's Coaching Program is designed to provide support for teachers in the classroom, as well as to encourage professional leadership roles for teachers in our District. The Instructional Coach will work side-by-side with teachers to improve student learning outcomes, spending at least 80% of their time directly supporting teacher development and student learning. The Coach does not merely tell others or demonstrate "how to do it," they actually "do it" as they provide ongoing, job-embedded professional learning and support, particularly in foundational math instruction, conceptual understanding, and problem-solving practices. Part of the role within the CIA Team assists with the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) K-12, with a specific emphasis on elementary math intervention and enrichment. The incumbent will support teachers and interventionists to ensure a continuum of instruction, practices, and interventions of varying intensity to meet the needs of all students in math. Responsibilities may include screening students, grouping students, assigning research-based targeted instruction or intervention, monitoring progress, and evaluating the success of implementation. The Coach is a teacher leader who assumes a support role that includes, but is not limited to: Peer coaching Side-by-side coaching cycles Planning, enacting a lesson/part of a lesson, and debriefing Participation in instructional rounds Team/collaborative planning (grade-level focus) Co-teaching and demonstration lessons Analyzing student data to inform math instruction through collaborative team structures (PLCs) Assessment (diagnostic, formative, and summative in math) Proctoring, monitoring, analyzing, and debriefing assessments Action research projects focused on math instruction Facilitating/participating in professional learning and coaching meetings Effective professional learning is job-embedded within a safe, positive environment and built through trusting relationships. An effective Instructional Coach will work collaboratively with teachers, the CIA team, principals, and directors to support the school's educational objectives. The Coach will serve as a positive role model and "thought partner" in a non-evaluative, non-supervisory role to better support teachers in meeting the needs of all learners in mathematics.
Minimum Qualifications :
Must hold or be eligible to hold required State of Delaware Certification Elementary certification (K-5 or K-6) required Mathematics specialization, endorsement, or demonstrated expertise in elementary math instruction strongly preferred Master's degree, preferred Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in elementary education required Experience working in diverse, low-income communities; sensitivity to and awareness of the needs of culturally diverse students and families Experience in planning and facilitating professional learning Previous experience working as an Instructional or District Coach is greatly preferred Proven track record of supporting math achievement and data-driven decision making Experience implementing successful strategies that improve outcomes for diverse learners, including those needing intervention or enrichment in math
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Coaches, supports, and mentors Kâ€"5 classroom teachers in evidence-based math instructional practices, including number sense, fluency, problem solving, and mathematical discourse. Works with teachers individually and in grade-level teams to provide practical support across a range of elementary math strategies, including use of manipulatives, models, and visual representations. Serves as a math content and pedagogy advisor to teachers and administrators. Conducts Cycles of Support and Side-by-Side Coaching Cycles using the Student-Centered Coaching model, with a focus on improving student math outcomes. Participates in instructional rounds with an emphasis on math instruction and student engagement. Conducts regular meetings with teachers to examine student math work, analyze misconceptions, and monitor progress to support teacher reflection and action. Designs and conducts math-focused demonstration lessons, modeling best practices such as the gradual release model, math discourse routines, and problem-based learning. Supports horizontal and vertical alignment of Kâ€"5 math standards and progression of skills, ensuring coherence across grade levels. Assists teachers with planning, sequencing, and scaffolding math instruction aligned to district curriculum and state standards. Collaborates with teachers to develop lesson plans that incorporate conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application. Assists teachers in organizing math classrooms, including the effective use of manipulatives, math centers, and instructional materials. Develops and maintains weekly schedules to support teachers; at least 80% of time is spent in "Teaching and Learning." Collaborates with school administration to develop school-wide and teacher-specific support plans focused on math achievement. Maintains accurate and consistent documentation of coaching cycles, team meetings, and PLC work. Analyzes a variety of math assessment data (screeners, diagnostics, i-Ready, state assessments) to support continuous improvement in student performance. Assists teachers in disaggregating math data to guide instructional decisions and differentiate instruction. Supports MTSS processes by helping place students in appropriate math intervention or enrichment groups and monitoring progress. Plans and delivers school-based and system-wide professional learning in elementary math instruction, and provides follow-up coaching to ensure implementation. Builds and sustains a strong professional learning community focused on math achievement. Implements district, state, and federal policies, regulations, and laws. Participates in DOE stakeholder meetings (as needed), faculty meetings, professional development, and conferences to promote professional growth and student achievement. Assists with school-wide testing and assessments, as needed.
Standard Requirements:
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with students, educators, parents, and community members. Knowledgeable about formative and diagnostic assessments and research based instructional practices. Equity driven, demonstrated sensitivity to issues impacting various cultural, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. Superior grasp of effective instructional and behavioral methods and strategies for educating urban youth including but not limited to right brained restorative practices (trauma informed practices), culturally responsive teaching, Social Emotional Learning, grading for equity and coaching for equity.
