Job Description

The UVU Math Mentor Program is looking for mentors who are self-motivated/high performing students, have excellent time management skills, and are passionate about helping others succeed! Mentors will interact with students both in and out of the classroom. Mentors provide tailored student support, cultivate community, connect students to valuable resources, and assist students in developing strategies for success academically, personally, and professionally. Attend and participate in required bi-annual Spring and Fall training retreats, weekly training, and monthly team-building activities Be an embedded mentor and model student by attending and engaging in their assigned course Help students navigate the course successfully and refer students to relevant resources as needed Hold one-on-ones with each student at least once during the semester Hold regular face-to-face or virtual study sessions for individuals and groups Accurately account for and track time spent fulfilling duties as a mentor Submit time to TIMS by payroll due dates Meet with assigned instructor a minimum of 30 minutes per week Complete all UVU and program trainings in a timely manner Check and respond to student, instructor, and program communications within 24 hours Have flexible hours of availability including Saturday or Sunday most weekends Conduct student outreach in a professional manner Must be a current UVU student. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 Must have earned a B+ or better in
MAT 1010/1015, MAT
1030/1035, or tested out of MAT 1010 or 1030 upon enrolling at UVU. Must have a recommendation from UVU mathematics faculty or equivalent, such as a former math instructor.
Must be available to attend:
Assigned class time Monthly team building activities Biannual Spring and Fall beginning of the semester training retreats Weekly training every Thursday from 4 pm-5 pm Knowledge Strong content knowledge of either Stem, Non-Stem, or both tracks at the Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning Department (MQR) course level Familiarity with Canvas, Microsoft Teams, and math learning platforms Familiarity with campus resources Basic knowledge of effective study skills and learning strategies Skills Time Management skills: Effective ability to prioritize and organize competing demands.

Exhibits availability, approachability, and professionalism.
Communication skills:
Excellent verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills. Engages in active and empathetic listening.
Collaboration skills:
Regularly produces relevant and significant contributions in a team environment. Receives feedback and promptly implements necessary changes. Encourages all group members to share ideas. Demonstrates dependability, cooperation, and adaptability.
Social Intelligence skills:
Demonstrates self-awareness, respect for others, tolerance for differences, growth mindset, and patience.
Ability to:
Proactively and professionally reach out to students and provide individualized math and student success support Maintain confidentiality Explain complex concepts and ideas in clear, concise, and approachable manner Maintain professional relationships with staff, faculty, and students Build community and contribute positively to classroom operations Prepare and present review concepts Create relevant study and review materials for study sessions
