KING-CHAVEZ NEIGHBORHOOD OF SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION
High School ELD TeacherREPORTS TO
PrincipalQUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Single Subject California Teaching Credential
- CLAD/BCLAD/CTEL or equivalent.
- Bachelor's Degree, including all courses needed to meet credential requirements.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English. Bilingual Spanish is preferred.
- Employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of a criminal background check andnegative TB skin test or chest X-ray.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build quality relationships with students.
- Establish a culture of high expectations that includes standards mastery and prepare students forlater grades by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and persevere withchallenging tasks.
- Engage and support all students in learning by using a variety of instructional strategies andresources to respond to students' diverse needs and by engaging students in problem solving and critical thinking skills, using culturally relevant examples. Work towards developing and maintaining cultural competencies.
- Instruct students in citizenship and character education.
- Use assigned curricula to plan and monitor learning experiences for all students that reflect andfollow standards-based grade-level expectations appropriate to the readiness and maturity of the students.
- Prepare and utilize lesson plans, which shall be submitted to the Principal. All materials, including the lesson plans, seating chart, class list, assigned duties and schedules, shall be available to the substitute teacher.
- Facilitate literacy-focused small-group instruction opportunities for guided reading and targeted intervention
- Assess and document students' academic and social growth regularly in accordance with state guidelines. Examine student assessment data to prepare progress reports and intervention plans consistent with school requirements, and to refine classroom activities to differentiate instruction for each student.
- Build quality relationships with all parents through "back-to-school" events, classroom visitations, home visits, conferences, telephone conversations, written communications and work samples so that parents are aware of their children's school progress and adjustment. Find ways to involve parents in their children's education.
- Collaborate with Special Education service personnel and interventionists for RTI and to provide instructional services to students with special needs consistent with the SST process and Individual Education Plans.
- Create and implement a classroom management plan that includes positive behavior supports needed to achieve an engaging and safe learning atmosphere in the classroom. Assume the primary responsibility for supervision of the behavior of students during the entire school day.
- Make referrals to Counselor, Vice-Principal or Principal for pupils who demonstrate severe antisocial behavioral patterns.
- Carry out assigned pupil supervision outside the classroom such as yard duty, assemblies, athletic events and extracurricular activities and fire and other emergency drills.
- Assist in general building supervision and discipline of students outside of the classroom.
- Maintain a neat, clean classroom environment and a professional personal appearance.
- Collaborate with Spanish partner teacher, fellow teachers, and Academic Coaches on planning,professional development, and standards-based curriculum development and common assessment designed to contribute to the continuous improvement of instruction at the school. Participate actively in Professional Learning Community activities, both on-site and off-site.
- Attend a reasonable number of meetings, parent conferences, and evening school programs that require student supervision.
- Support school-wide initiatives.
- Adhere to the standards, policies and practices outlined in the KCNS Staff Handbook andspecific Academy/Teacher Handbook.
- Perform all other obligations mandated by law or KCNS policy, and other reasonable andappropriate tasks assigned by the Administration.

Physical Abilities:
- Bending at the waist, kneeling, or crouching to assist students.
- Hearing and speaking clearly to exchange information and make presentations.
- Seeing to read, prepare and review a variety of activities and to monitor student activities.
- Lift and carry items up to 20 lbs.
- Walking and standing for extended periods of time to provide instruction and to escortstudents around campus.
- Sitting in order to work at desks or tables.
Hazards:
- Potential exposure to communicable diseases and contact with blood and other bodyfluids.
- Potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
