Position Overview Sussex Academy seeks a dynamic and student-centered educator to serve as a Middle School Social Studies Teacher. This position plays a critical role in advancing the school's vision to be a premier Kâ€"12 school system in the state of Delaware by supporting a culture of academic excellence, strong character, and continuous improvement. The Middle School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, standards-aligned instruction while contributing to a coherent Kâ€"12 system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. This role is essential in fostering a culture of leadership at the middle school level, promoting civic responsibility, and supporting systems that ensure student success and well-being. Primary Responsibilities Instruction & Student Learning Develop and implement engaging, standards-aligned social studies curriculum consistent with school goals, state standards, and Sussex Academy's mission and core values. Design and deliver instruction that emphasizes critical thinking, reading, writing, discussion, and analysis of historical and contemporary issues. Use a variety of instructional strategies, including inquiry-based learning, primary source analysis, and discussion-based protocols, to deepen student understanding. Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments; analyze student data to inform instruction and address individual student needs. Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including those requiring additional academic or behavioral support within the MTSS framework. Integrate literacy skills across content areas to support Sussex Academy's Kâ€"12 commitment to strong reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. Culture & Classroom Environment Promote a safe, inclusive, and student-centered classroom environment aligned with Sussex Academy's core values of Community, Integrity, Leadership, Respect, and Trust. Establish and maintain clear expectations for student behavior that support a positive and productive learning environment. Foster a culture of leadership by providing opportunities for student voice, civic engagement, and responsibility within the classroom and school community. Support student growth in both academic and interpersonal skills, preparing students to be thoughtful and engaged citizens. Collaboration & Professional Learning Collaborate with colleagues in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to align curriculum, analyze student data, and strengthen instructional practices. Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school initiatives that support continuous improvement and organizational coherence. Engage in ongoing professional learning to stay current with best practices in instruction, assessment, and middle school education. Student Support & Family Engagement Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress, achievement, and attendance in accordance with school procedures and applicable laws. Communicate effectively and consistently with students and families regarding progress, expectations, and opportunities for growth. Support school-wide systems related to student attendance, engagement, and well-being. Partner with families and staff to support students in both academic and social-emotional development. Operations & School Responsibilities Supervise students in classrooms and during school-related activities, including those occurring outside of the classroom. Administer state and local assessments in accordance with established guidelines. Utilize instructional technology, student information systems, and learning management platforms to support teaching and learning. Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Middle School or school administration. Ability to analyze and use student data to inform instructional decisions. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families. Ability to contribute to a collaborative and professional school culture.
