August 2026 Maclay School is looking for a Middle School Science teacher who combines strong teaching with a genuine care for students. This is someone who knows that middle school learners do their best work when they feel known and supported, and who creates a classroom where curiosity is encouraged and students are pushed to grow.Who You Are:
You are a teacher who believes students learn best through curiosity, inquiry, and active engagement with the world around them. You design science learning experiences that develop conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and a sense of wonder. You know how to guide students in asking meaningful questions, designing investigations, and making sense of evidence. You enjoy helping middle school students build confidence as thinkers and problem-solvers, supporting them as they take intellectual risks and engage in productive struggle. You understand that strong science instruction balances hands-on exploration with clear structures and purposeful reflection. You believe great teaching is both collaborative and iterative, and you're energized by opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow with a team. Above all, you find deep fulfillment in helping students see themselves as capable scientists who are curious about the world and equipped to understand it. Key Responsibilities Full-time instructor for Middle School Science, with courses that may include Life Science or Physical Science. Design learning experiences that promote inquiry, critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning. Create and maintain a classroom community that is warm, structured, and engaging, where students feel safe to take intellectual risks and are also challenged to grow. Incorporate lab work, experimentation, and hands-on learning experiences that deepen understanding of scientific concepts. Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning profiles, using varied strategies, representations, and scaffolds to support student mastery. Build systems that help students develop organization, independence, and ownership of their learning, including opportunities for reflection and revision. Integrate real-world applications and cross-disciplinary connections that help students see the relevance of science in everyday life. Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across grade levels to support curricular alignment, placement decisions, and mission-aligned instruction. Build positive relationships with families through clear, timely communication that supports student growth and strengthens the school-home partnership. Engage fully in the life of the school by advising students, participating in campus activities, and supporting Maclay's commitment to whole-child education. Contribute to a vibrant school culture by attending select after-school events that support community connection and student relationships. Perform additional responsibilities that support the school's mission and daily functioning as needed. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Science, Science Education, or a related field required; master's degree preferred. Prior experience teaching middle school science preferred; experience in life science or physical science strongly valued. Demonstrated skill in fostering inquiry, scientific thinking, and classroom discourse. Commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflection, and continuous improvement. Ability to build positive relationships with students while holding them to high academic and personal standards. A genuine desire to help students see themselves as curious, capable scientists. Physical Requirements and ADA Statement This role requires regular movement between classrooms and buildings, active engagement in classroom instruction, and the ability to navigate indoor and outdoor school environments. The position also requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate clearly, operate standard classroom technology, and occasionally lift materials up to 20-30 pounds.
