Position Overview:
The High School African American and Latinx Studies Teacher is responsible for developing and teaching an engaging and culturally responsive course focused on the history, culture, literature, contributions, and contemporary experiences of African American and Latinx communities. The teacher will create an inclusive learning environment that fosters critical thinking, self-awareness, and an appreciation of diversity. This role requires a commitment to addressing historical and contemporary issues related to race, identity, and social justice, while helping students build the skills needed to succeed academically and contribute to a more equitable society.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and deliver rigorous, culturally relevant curriculum for African American and Latinx Studies that reflect the histories, journeys, and contributions of these communities. Develop interdisciplinary lesson plans that incorporate diverse perspectives, texts, and media, engaging students in discussions around identity, race, culture, and social justice. Encourage students to engage critically with historical and contemporary issues affecting African American and Latinx communities, such as systemic racism, immigration, identity, and cultural resilience. Create a classroom environment that promotes empathy, respect, and understanding, where students can express their own perspectives while exploring new ideas. Use diverse instructional strategies, including collaborative learning, project-based assignments, and technology, to engage students with different learning styles. Engage with local community organizations, historians, and activists to enrich the curriculum and connect students with real-world perspectives and experiences.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Education, History, Sociology, Ethnic Studies, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). Valid teaching certification in secondary education. Experience teaching African American and Latinx history, culture, or literature at the high school level. Knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy and the ability to apply it to diverse learning environments. Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage students in meaningful discussions on sensitive topics. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and socially just educational environment.
Preferred:
Bilingual or multilingual abilities (especially Spanish) to engage with a diverse student body. Experience working with diverse student populations, particularly African American and Latinx communities. Background in social justice activism or community-based work related to racial and ethnic issues.
Compensation:
