Critical School-Based Instructional Leadership Position Position Summary The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics is a critical leadership position responsible for supporting, strengthening, and monitoring the school's mathematics program. The Instructional Lead Teacher is not a classroom based position. The ILT also serves as a key instructional leader, department chair, teacher coach, testing coordinator, MTSS Lead, and school improvement partner. This position works closely with the Principal and Administration to ensure that mathematics instruction is rigorous, standards-aligned, data-driven, equitable, and responsive to student needs. The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics chairs the Mathematics Department, supports collaborative planning, monitors assessment and intervention data, coaches teachers, leads mathematics-related school improvement efforts, and helps ensure that all students have access to high-quality mathematics instruction. The Instructional Lead Teacher actively participates in instructional leadership teams and supports curriculum implementation, instructional planning, assessments, interventions, and student problem-solving. This position requires strong instructional expertise, leadership in collaborative planning, effective use of student data, and a commitment to continuous school improvement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Mathematics Program Leadership The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Work closely with the Principal and Administration to monitor the effectiveness of the mathematics program.
- Serve as the Mathematics Department Chair and lead department meetings, professional learning, collaborative planning, and instructional improvement efforts.
- Support the implementation of a high-quality mathematics instructional program that complements and supports district curriculum expectations.
- Assist with mathematics curriculum mapping, pacing, vertical alignment, and instructional planning.
- Monitor the use of standards-aligned instructional materials, tasks, and assessments.
- Support the development of a strong STEM-focused mathematics culture that promotes problem-solving, reasoning, collaboration, and real-world application. Instructional Coaching and Teacher Support The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Serve as a teacher coach for mathematics teachers.
- Provide demonstration lessons, model best instructional practices, and support teachers in implementing effective mathematics strategies.
- Conduct non-evaluative classroom observations and provide timely, constructive feedback to teachers.
- Support newly hired mathematics teachers through orientation, mentoring, coaching, and ongoing instructional support.
- Assist teachers with lesson planning, differentiation, questioning strategies, student discourse, and the use of data to improve instruction.
- Promote culturally responsive, inclusive, and equitable mathematics instruction for diverse learners. Data, Assessment, and Testing Coordination The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Lead collaborative planning based on student assessment data.
- Support the development, implementation, and analysis of common formative assessments and benchmark assessments in mathematics.
- Serve as a testing coordinator or mathematics assessment lead as assigned by Administration.
- Monitor mathematics assessment data to identify trends, gaps, strengths, and priority areas for improvement.
- Support teachers in using assessment results to plan reteaching, enrichment, interventions, and acceleration.
- Communicate assessment trends and instructional recommendations to Administration and mathematics staff. Intervention, MTSS, and Student Support The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Serve as the MTSS Lead or mathematics MTSS representative as assigned.
- Monitor the mathematics intervention program to ensure students receive timely, targeted, and effective support.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional and behavioral interventions connected to mathematics achievement.
- Collaborate with teachers, counselors, special educators, ESOL staff, and Administration to support student problem-solving.
- Assist in identifying students in need of Tier 2 and Tier 3 mathematics interventions.
- Track intervention progress and help adjust supports based on student performance data.
- Support enrichment and acceleration opportunities for students demonstrating advanced mathematics readiness. School Improvement Leadership The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of the School Improvement Plan, especially goals related to mathematics achievement, student growth, intervention, and equity.
- Use mathematics data to help identify schoolwide instructional priorities.
- Participate as an active member of the instructional leadership team.
- Help align mathematics department goals with schoolwide improvement goals.
- Report and consult regularly with the Principal and Administration regarding mathematics progress, instructional needs, assessment results, and intervention outcomes.
- Support continuous improvement through data analysis, reflective practice, and collaborative problem-solving. Communication and Collaboration The Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics will:
- Communicate effectively with teachers, students, families, administrators, and school system staff.
- Share mathematics updates, expectations, assessment information, and instructional resources with the department.
- Foster a professional, collaborative, and solutions-oriented mathematics team culture.
- Support family and community engagement related to mathematics achievement, intervention, and student success.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Administration. Qualifications The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong teaching background and expertise in mathematics.
- Evidence of high student achievement and effective mathematics instruction.
- Experience analyzing student performance data and using data to improve instruction.
- Experience leading collaborative planning and professional learning.
- Knowledge of mathematics curriculum, standards, instructional strategies, assessments, and current best practices.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and support teachers in a non-evaluative capacity.
- Experience supporting diverse learners through equitable and culturally responsive practices.
- Knowledge of intervention systems, MTSS structures, and student support processes.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple leadership responsibilities.
- Experience with technology, digital instructional tools, and data platforms.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community partners. Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, mathematics, or a related field required.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in mathematics instruction, collaborative planning, coaching, assessment, intervention, or school improvement preferred. Certification
- Holds or is eligible for appropriate Maryland State Department of Education certification in the area of assignment.
- Advanced Professional Certificate preferred.
- National Board Certification preferred, where applicable.
Supervisory Responsibilities This position does not include formal supervisory or evaluative responsibilities. However, the Instructional Lead Teacher for Mathematics serves in a critical leadership capacity by chairing the Mathematics Department, coaching teachers, supporting instructional improvement, monitoring intervention efforts, and advising Administration on the effectiveness of the mathematics program. Pay:
$62,291.00 - $131,408.00 per year
