Job Description
School-Age Teacher Job Description Position Summary The School-Age Teacher is responsible for the supervision, safety, and educational development of children typically ages 5-12 years old in a licensed childcare center. The teacher plans and implements age-appropriate activities that support children's academic, social, emotional, and physical development while maintaining compliance with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and COMAR regulations. Key Responsibilities Child Supervision & Safety
- Supervise school-age children at all times to ensure their health, safety, and well-being.
- Maintain proper staff-to-child ratios as required by Maryland childcare regulations.
- Implement center policies regarding discipline, behavior management, and safety procedures.
- Monitor children during indoor play, outdoor activities, meals, and transitions. Program Planning
- Plan and implement age-appropriate activities such as: o Homework assistance o Arts and crafts o Science projects o Literacy and educational games o Physical activities
- Encourage social development, teamwork, and positive behavior. Classroom Management
- Maintain a structured and engaging learning environment.
- Set clear expectations for behavior and use positive guidance strategies.
- Ensure classroom materials and supplies are organized and accessible. Communication
- Communicate with parents regarding: o Child behavior o Daily activities o Academic support
- Collaborate with the center director and other teachers to ensure consistent program quality. Documentation & Compliance
- Complete required documentation including: o Attendance records o Incident/accident reports o Activity plans
- Follow all MSDE Office of Child Care regulations and licensing requirements. Health & Sanitation
- Maintain a clean and safe classroom environment.
- Follow procedures for handwashing, sanitation, and emergency preparedness.

Minimum Qualifications (Maryland) Typical requirements include:- Must be 18 years or older
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 1 year experience working with groups of school-age children
- May require documented hours such as: o 800 hours supervising school-age children, OR o 600 hours experience + 15 clock hours training, OR o 400 hours experience + 45 clock hours training o 90 Clock Hours in School-Age o ADA (American with Disability Act) Certificate o 9-Hour Communication Course Additional requirements may include:
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Background check and fingerprinting
