Certified Teacher Contract Days Position Summary The Middle School AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elective Teacher is responsible for implementing the AVID College and Career Readiness System with fidelity to support students in developing the academic behaviors, organizational habits, leadership skills, and college-going mindset necessary for success in high school and beyond. The AVID Teacher creates a rigorous and supportive learning environment focused on preparing students for advanced academic opportunities while fostering student ownership, self-advocacy, and long-term educational planning. The teacher serves as both an instructor and advocate to ensure students are prepared to transition successfully into high school coursework and future postsecondary opportunities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Program Implementation & Instruction Implement the AVID elective curriculum with fidelity and alignment to AVID methodologies and expectations. Deliver instruction grounded in WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading). Facilitate structured tutorials using inquiry-based learning and student collaboration. Teach and reinforce organizational systems including binder management, planner use, note-taking, study skills, and time management. Support students in goal setting, self-monitoring, and development of executive functioning skills. Integrate college and career awareness activities into instruction. Student Support & Advocacy Develop strong relationships with students and families to support academic success and positive school engagement. Monitor student grades, attendance, behavior, and overall progress. Conduct regular student conferences focused on academic growth and goal attainment. Promote enrollment and success in advanced coursework and accelerated learning opportunities. Encourage student leadership, self-advocacy, and accountability. Support equitable access and opportunities for students traditionally underrepresented in rigorous academic pathways. Transition and College Readiness Support successful transitions from elementary school to middle school and middle school to high school. Collaborate with high school AVID staff to establish continuity and student recruitment into secondary AVID programs. Coordinate college and career exploration activities including guest speakers, college awareness events, and campus visits. Assist students in developing a four-year academic mindset and understanding future educational pathways. Data Monitoring & Accountability Maintain accurate AVID student records and program documentation. Monitor student achievement indicators including GPA, attendance, assessment performance, course completion, and engagement. Analyze student data to inform interventions and program improvements. Participate in AVID certification and continuous improvement processes. Schoolwide AVID Leadership Serve as an active member of the AVID Site Team. Support implementation of identified WICOR instructional strategies schoolwide. Model AVID instructional practices and collaborate with colleagues to expand college and career readiness culture across campus. Participate in family engagement activities and promote awareness of AVID expectations and opportunities. Professional Responsibilities Attend and participate in AVID Summer Institute and required AVID professional learning. Participate in AVID site team meetings and coaching cycles. Maintain compliance with district policies and AVID Center expectations. Demonstrate professionalism, collaboration, and a commitment to continuous growth. Minimum Qualifications Valid New Mexico Teaching License. Bachelor's Degree required. Experience working with middle school students preferred. Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills. Preferred Qualifications Previous AVID implementation experience. Experience with inquiry-based instruction and collaborative learning. Demonstrated success supporting student engagement and academic growth. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of AVID philosophy and WICOR instructional practices. Ability to support adolescent development and executive functioning skills. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to use student data to guide interventions and instruction. Commitment to preparing students for rigorous high school coursework and postsecondary success.
