Director of Arts Friends Academy is seeking a creative, technically proficient, and values-driven Media & Studio Arts Teacher to join our Visual Arts Department. This role is designed for an educator who can bridge the gap between traditional darkroom techniques and cutting-edge digital storytelling while fostering an environment of reflection, integrity, and community. The ideal candidate will guide students to use media not just for technical mastery, but as a medium for finding their voice and exploring the world with a discerning, ethical lens. The successful candidate will enthusiastically and actively engage in the full life of the school, including faculty meetings, theater events, back to school nights, and departmental and divisional meetings after school.
Essential Responsibilities:
The following duties are representative of the role; responsibilities may evolve to meet the needs of the department and school community:
- Teach digital and darkroom photography, leading students in concept development, composition, digital editing and darkroom development.
- Instruct upper school students in filmmaking, including the full production cycle (story development, storyboarding, cinematography, lighting, sound, and editing).
- Teach two to four sections of middle school art, a curriculum which blends digital and traditional mediums.
- Film and edit arts functions including theater productions and concerts, making them available to the community in a timely manner.
- Assess and evaluate student performance, providing constructive feedback and support.
- Organize and display student artwork around the school and at regular arts shows in the gallery space.
- Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and the school administration to support student success. Attend departmental, divisional, and all-school meetings as scheduled
- Create a positive and inclusive teaching environment within a Quaker community that encourages student creativity and self-expression.
- Maintain a safe and orderly classroom, ensuring proper care and use of art supplies and equipment, including the darkroom.
- Stay current with developments in education and the arts, integrating new techniques and technologies into the curriculum in order to develop a diverse and engaging art curriculum for middle and high school students alongside the department convenor and Director of Arts.
- Serves as an advisor to a group of eight to ten US students.
- Supports a co-curricular activity such as coaching an athletics team or leading a school program or activity.

Qualifications:
- A deep commitment to student-centered learning and an interest in (or experience with) Quaker pedagogy and Quaker education.
- Mastery of DSLR/Mirrorless systems, video equipment, lighting equipment, and darkroom chemistry. Professional fluency in Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Lightroom/Photoshop or an equivalent.
- A strong portfolio of personal and student work and a demonstrated passion for teaching diverse age groups.
- Must have a willingness to engage in professional development.
Education and Experience:
- A bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Film, Media Studies, Photography, or Art Education is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
- Experience with Middle School (Grades 5
- 8) and Upper School (Grades 9
- 12) students.
- Ability to teach both Analog and Digital photography, as well as the darkroom process.

Salary:
The salary range is expected to be $73,000
Actual compensation will be based on the candidate's relevant and transferable years of service, and other factors, which include internal peer equity, the market, and other organizational considerations.
