Job Description

General Summary Under the general supervision of the Middle School Head, the History Teacher is responsible for the instructional program, general operations, and management of assigned classes or programs. This position will begin in the next academic year and will focus primarily on Grades 5-8 , while maintaining flexibility to teach at both the Middle School and Upper School levels as needed. The History Teacher builds on the academic foundations established at earlier grade levels and develops engaging lesson plans, independent learning exercises, materials, curricula, and instructional methods that address both individual student needs and whole-group dynamics. The incumbent should demonstrate comfort teaching both American and World History within a developmentally appropriate framework. Essential Duties Teach classes as assigned, with primary responsibility for Grades 5-8, providing effective and professional classroom instruction, assessment, and management; Design and implement curriculum and instruction consistent with the mission, values, and standards established by the School; Ensure classroom instruction, lessons, and materials foster diversity, inclusion, and belonging; Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and areas for growth; Grade assignments and examinations in ways that build students' confidence, independence, and accountability; Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and on enhancing instructional practices and strategies; Establish effective communication and relationships with students and parents; Exhibit a growth mindset about teaching practices and work toward professional goals and development; Help maintain School policies, protocols, and expectations; Develop and maintain professional, collaborative, and collegial relationships with faculty, staff, and community partners to benefit students and programs; Support the work of the Head of School and senior leadership; Participate in required non-classroom activities including parent/student conferences, retreats, faculty meetings, field trips, and special activities and performance events; Provide effective supervision of students to promote a safe and healthy School experience, including supervision outside of the classroom (e.g., lunch or study hall); Complete required reports and tasks in a timely and professional manner; Perform related duties as assigned. Special Requirements Must be able to complete a background check. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability and willingness to participate fully in a dynamic day school located in New York City; Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing; Ability to remain responsible at all times for the supervision of students during classes and generally at all times when on campus or off campus; Must possess an enthusiastic commitment to building and sustaining a diverse, just, inclusive, and equitable academic environment; Ability to learn new technology and systems commensurate with program-level requirements; Ability to demonstrate creativity and flexibility in pedagogy; Demonstrated ability to act as a role model of professionalism; Ability to model honesty, accountability, understanding, tolerance, respect, care, and kindness for students; Ability to multitask, remain calm under pressure, and treat all members of the community with respect; Curiosity, flexibility, a positive attitude, and a good sense of humor; Ability to follow all School policies and procedures as written in the employee and parent handbooks.
