POSITION SUMMARY
Park Academy seeks a student-centered Middle School Social Studies Teacher to design and deliver engaging instruction for students in grades 6-8 in a small independent school specializing in dyslexia and language-based learning differences. The Social Studies Teacher will build a classroom environment where students develop historical thinking, geographic literacy, civic understanding, and critical inquiry skills — while experiencing instruction that is explicitly designed to meet the needs of neurodiverse learners. This position operates within a collaborative, supportive faculty community committed to evidence-based, multisensory pedagogy. Park Academy features small class sizes, strong administrative support, and a school-wide commitment to intentional instruction informed by the Science of Reading. The ideal candidate brings both content expertise and a strengths-based perspective about how students with learning differences access and engage with learning.
QUALIFICATIONS
Professional Qualifications Must possess a current Oregon Teaching License. Out of state licensure considered. Bachelor's degree in education or history-related field from an accredited four-year institution Master's degree in Teaching preferred Special education endorsement preferred Experience with differentiating instruction and assessment Experience using multiple assessments to inform instruction Experience using positive behavior supports Understanding of dyslexia, dyscalculia, executive function, working memory, and processing speed and their impacts on learning Strong pedagogical foundation Personal Qualifications Collaborative and cooperative approach to education Maintains high but reasonable expectations for student success Highly reflective professional practice Commitment to developing strong, nurturing relationships with students Patient, caring and kind demeanor Ability to create a highly structured yet flexible learning environment Possess flexibility of thought and strengths-based perspective Primary Duties and Responsibilities Teach Middle School Social Studies and occasional elective classes Design and implement developmentally appropriate instructional activities and lessons which lead to mastery of state standards Use multisensory approaches to appeal to a variety of learning needs Differentiate instruction and assessment to ensure access to curricula Collaborate frequently with staff, families, and administrative team to deliver personalized, differentiated program for students Participate in the observation, evaluation, and problem-solving process for students who may need additional support Secondary Duties and Responsibilities Attend a variety of meetings, including staff meetings, professional learning communities, and professional development opportunities Attend occasional off-hour events, including, back-to-school nights, parent-teacher conferences, and school events Maintain educational best practices, including appropriate lesson planning, student progress monitoring, family and peer communication, and report writing Support a positive school culture Support and implement school policy as related to both faculty and students in and out of the classroom Participate in a reflective, individualized professional development program Supervise breaks, lunches, and passing times as assigned Collects, records, and maintains accurate student records Maintains open and consistent communication with families about student progress Stipend opportunities are available, such as after-school class facilitation, summer camp teaching, and special project management.
