Job Description

Organization Summary Green Woods Charter School (GWCS) provides children in grades K through 8 with the opportunity to be active, knowledgeable, and conscientious young investigators by fostering a keen understanding of the interdependence of and our impact on our local and global existence; creating active young stewards of the natural world. GWCS serves children primarily in the Roxborough catchment area of Philadelphia.
Position Summary:
The Middle School Math Teacher role creates and administers a classroom program that is conducive to student learning and development. The Teacher uses a variety of classroom techniques for learning and implements interdisciplinary activities, field trips, outdoor experiences, educational technologies, and collaborative work with other teachers in grade bands. The ideal Teacher is flexible and committed to a continuous process for professional growth. Teachers report to the Assistant Principal.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Promote high expectations, demonstrates a caring attitude, and establishes an environment that supports social, emotional, and academic development in students
  • Supervise students within the classroom and other assigned areas
  • Develop lesson plans and delivers group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines
  • Collaborate with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues
  • Respond to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress
  • Frequently communicate with parents and caregivers about their child's progress by phone, email, in conferences, newsletters, and through report cards. Be available for individual meetings when needed
  • Evaluate the progress of each student through formal and informal assessment
  • Use positive and productive techniques for improving student behavior Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Commitment to GWSC mission and belief that all students can learn Knowledge of teaching methods, curriculum, and education programs
  • Experience with using educational technologies The ability to communicate effectively with parents Demonstrated professionalism and responsibility, and a strong work ethic A positive, high-energy attitude, and a drive for personal excellence Flexible attitude, ability to work with urgency Strong problem solving and strategic thinking skills Willingness and desire to participate in unexpected projects • The ability to establish cooperative working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and parents • Strong organizational skills • A comfort and excitement about working with children from diverse backgrounds • A high level of interest in collaboration • Commitment to professional growth
Education and Experience :
  • BA or BS in Elementary Education, or a related field
  • Teacher certification- completed or in process
  • Demonstrated expertise in subject area
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as: Functioning in classroom space - walking, sitting, standing, reaching Must be able to sit for up to two hours looking at a computer monitor, using a keyboard/mouse and typing Must be able to stand for up to two hours instructing a classroom of learners Must be able to lift up to 25lbs on a frequent basis Application Instructions Email resume and cover letter to recruitment@greenwoodscharter.org.
