Job Description
The Diocese of Charleston acknowledges that the Catholic School teacher is vital to the educational mission of the Church. The teacher not only stimulates the acquisition of knowledge and understanding, but serves as a consistent, joyful and living witness to the teachings of Christ. Every employee in the Catholic School is a religion teacher and expected, in word and behavior, to witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The middle school teacher will be consistent at all times, in example and expression, with the tenets and morals of the Catholic Faith. The teacher will provide a safe and developmentally appropriate academic program, in accordance with diocesan and school policies and procedures. The teacher must be a creative and enthusiastic person who has the passion to serve. The teacher fulfills the mission of the Catholic school by providing an environment rooted in Gospel values and academic excellence. The teacher must possess a bachelor's degree and a valid teaching certificate. Certification to teach high school level standard, college prep, and honors level math courses including, but not limited to, Algebra I and Geometry is ideal, but not a must. This position requires, but is not limited to, the following duties: Support and uphold the mission of St. Andrew's Catholic School and the Diocese of Charleston at all times. Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church. Support and adhere to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and diocese. Maintain confidentiality regarding all school matters. Provide effective Mathematics programs of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of students. Provide instruction and assessment for understanding. Plan for instruction with logically sequenced objectives and provide appropriate material and resources for students to engage in learning. Communicate clear objectives for all learning activities and create projects to enhance learning opportunities. Use effective instructional methods/models according to professional standard practice. Use varied assessment tools to perform both formative and summative assessments. Choose all content area material for students, and prepare assignments and discussion topics. Demonstrate a willingness to respond to individual learning needs through differentiated instruction and centers-based learning. Prepare lesson plans consistent with the school mission, which includes providing students with the opportunity to become critical thinkers and ethical users of information while providing authentic, real world opportunities to engage with information and content learned. Incorporate technology into daily lessons. Practice positive, consistent discipline in the management of the classroom. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment. Develop and maintain a classroom environment appropriate for all learners, within the limits of available resources, and consistent with current best practices in education and all content areas that promote a love of reading and lifelong learning. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Communicate and collaborate with parents, staff, and administration for optimal student progress regarding academic, behavioral, or safety concerns. Conference with parents upon request and respond to messages in a timely manner. Maintain current and accurate records according to school policy. Maintain records as required by law, diocesan policy, and administrative guidelines, and collaborate with colleagues on student progress. Meet staff development guidelines as set forth by the diocese and the administration. Demonstrate professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits. Demonstrate commitment to remaining current in professional practices and developments, informational technologies, and educational research applicable to the subject area. Attend and participate in faculty meetings, diocesan meetings, professional development, faculty committees, etc. Be familiar with all safety procedures.
