Support Memphis, TN $18.75/hr Substitute / On-Demand Hours vary based on school need; this is an on-demand substitute position. Shifts are flexible and typically align with the standard school day. Hours are not guaranteed and will fluctuate throughout the academic year. We usually respond within a day About this role KIPP Memphis is seeking dedicated and reliable Non-Certified Substitutes to support its network of schools across Memphis, TN. KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) is a nationally recognized network of tuition-free, open-enrollment public charter schools committed to preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and beyond. As a Non-Certified Substitute, you will play a vital role in maintaining continuity of learning when regular classroom teachers are unavailable. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about education and eager to make a meaningful impact in the lives of students. Substitutes at KIPP Memphis are expected to uphold the school's high academic and behavioral standards, foster a positive and structured classroom environment, and serve as a dependable resource for school staff. Whether stepping into a math class, a reading session, or a special subject period, your presence ensures that students never miss a beat in their educational journey. This is an on-demand, as-needed position, meaning your schedule will flex based on school needs. Substitutes are called upon throughout the academic year and should be prepared to work across multiple KIPP Memphis campuses. Candidates must meet all required credentialing and background check requirements prior to their first assignment. A Day in the Life A typical day as a Non-Certified Substitute at KIPP Memphis begins with a call or notification that your services are needed at one of the network's campuses. Upon arrival, you check in with the front office, receive the absent teacher's lesson plans, and prepare the classroom for the day. You greet students as they enter, establish expectations, and guide them through the planned curriculum — whether that's a reading activity, a math worksheet, or a group project. Throughout the day, you manage student behavior in alignment with KIPP's school culture norms, take attendance, and ensure transitions between activities run smoothly. You may collaborate briefly with a department head, instructional coach, or paraprofessional who checks in to offer support. At the end of the school day, you leave notes for the returning teacher summarizing student progress and any behavioral observations, ensuring a seamless handoff. Success in this role looks like students who remained on-task, felt supported, and experienced minimal disruption to their learning. Responsibilities Implement lesson plans left by the absent classroom teacher, delivering instruction clearly and effectively to students across assigned grade levels. Maintain a safe, structured, and positive classroom environment consistent with KIPP Memphis's school culture and behavioral expectations. Take accurate attendance and report any student absences or concerns to the appropriate school administrator. Manage student behavior using positive reinforcement and de-escalation strategies, referring serious incidents to school leadership as needed. Adapt to varying classroom settings, subject areas, and grade levels across multiple KIPP Memphis campuses as assignments require. Communicate professionally and collaboratively with school staff, including administrators, instructional coaches, and support personnel. Leave detailed, accurate notes for the returning teacher regarding lesson completion, student participation, and any notable classroom events. Maintain confidentiality of student information and adhere to all KIPP Memphis and district-level policies and procedures. Requirements Required ! Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. ! Completion of Jason Flatt Act Training (youth suicide awareness and prevention). ! Completion of Erin's Law Online Training (child sexual abuse prevention education). ! Successful completion of the KIPP Memphis Background Check prior to the first assignment.
