Job Description

EXHIBITS CUSTODIAN
Examination No. 26-020 San Diego Superior Court is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Exhibits Custodian. The eligible list of candidates resulting from this recruitment will replace the existing list. There is one (1) vacancy approved to be filled.
JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, an Exhibits Custodian is responsible for the acceptance, preservation, safeguarding, storage, and legal disposition of physical materials entered into evidence during court proceedings; and performs related duties as required. Typical duties may include but are not limited to: maintaining the chain of custody of evidence; ensuring that all property and items entered into evidence are properly recorded, labeled, preserved, stored, and safeguarded; establishing and maintaining files, records, documents, and reports; determining and completing the disposition of all evidence; coordinating with other local and state law enforcement agencies to store and dispose of firearms, narcotics and hazardous chemicals; maintaining an account of cash and currency evidence and coordinating the transfer to banking institutions when appropriate; may be assigned other clerical support activities associated with criminal court operations as necessary to meet the needs of the court. Incumbents in this job class may be exposed to narcotics, explosives, firearms, noxious fumes, and hazardous chemicals; and routinely perform work activities that require physical exertion, including heavy lifting of objects weighing over 40 pounds, bending, stooping, carrying, walking, climbing ladders, raising arms, and reaching above shoulder height. The
IDEAL CANDIDATE
should have the following:
KNOWLEDGE OF
Methods for the receipt, recording, storage, and disposition of a variety of physical evidence; generally accepted warehousing procedures and record keeping methods, to include any relevant safety practices; California Penal Code, Civil Procedures Code, Government Code, and other laws and court policies pertinent to the receipt, storage, release, and disposition of property and evidence including firearms, narcotics and hazardous chemicals; generally accepted methods for the handling and accounting of cash and currency.
ABILITY TO
Determine methods of handling and storing a wide variety of physical evidence; maintain accurate records of incoming, outgoing and stored evidence; maintain effective working relationships with judicial staff and court employees, law enforcement agencies and other county and court departments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of full-time experience in a criminal justice or government agency that included responsibility for the receipt, preservation, storage, and disposition of material and/or evidence; OR One (1) year of full-time experience working in court operations that included the handling of court exhibits; OR Two (2) years of full-time experience performing warehousing operations.
