The K-5 Band Director is responsible for planning and delivering a beginning instrumental music program for elementary students. The teacher will provide instruction in foundational instrumental techniques, music literacy, and ensemble performance while fostering student interest and growth in instrumental music in alignment with Alabama Course of Study standards.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and implement engaging, standards-based beginning instrumental music instruction
- Teach foundational skills on woodwind, brass, percussion, or recorder instruments as appropriate
- Introduce students to music reading, rhythm, tone production, and ensemble playing
- Develop and direct beginner ensembles and performances
- Prepare students for school concerts, programs, and community performances
- Assess and monitor student progress; maintain accurate records
- Establish and maintain a structured, positive, and developmentally appropriate classroom environment
- Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and Fine Arts Department personnel
- Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student progress and participation
- Maintain instruments, equipment, and instructional materials
- Coordinate instrument inventory, distribution, and care procedures
- Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school activities
- Support district and school initiatives
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of beginning instrumental music pedagogy and teaching strategies
- Ability to teach foundational band instruments and ensemble skills
- Strong classroom management skills for elementary learners
- Ability to motivate and engage young students in instrumental music
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to integrate technology into instruction
- Knowledge of instrument care, maintenance, and classroom management systems
- Ability to integrate technology into music instruction and production planning
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university
- Valid Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate in Music (or eligibility to obtain)
- Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and pass required background checks
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching elementary instrumental music or beginning band
- Proficiency on one or more band instruments (woodwind, brass, or percussion)
- Experience directing beginner ensembles and school performances
- Strong background in elementary music pedagogy and classroom instruction
