EXEMPT X NON EXEMPT JOB DESCRIPTION
The High School Band Director is responsible for planning, developing, and delivering a comprehensive instrumental music program. The director will provide instruction in instrumental performance, music theory, and ensemble development while leading " marching band, concert band, and related ensembles in accordance with Alabama Course of Study standards.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Plan and implement engaging, standards-based instrumental music instruction
  • Direct and rehearse marching band, concert band, and other instrumental ensembles
  • Teach instrumental techniques, music literacy, and performance skills
  • Select appropriate repertoire for student ensembles and performances
  • Organize and supervise rehearsals, sectionals, and performances
  • Prepare students for district, state, and community performances, competitions, and evaluations
  • Coordinate marching band performances, including football games, parades, and special events
  • Assess and monitor student progress; maintain accurate records
  • Establish and maintain a structured, disciplined, and positive rehearsal environment
  • Collaborate with school staff, administrators, and Fine Arts Department personnel
  • Communicate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student participation and progress
  • Manage and maintain instruments, uniforms, equipment, and inventory
  • Coordinate travel, logistics, and fundraising activities as needed
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and school activities
  • Support district and school initiatives
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
  • Strong knowledge of instrumental music pedagogy and conducting techniques
  • Ability to direct large ensembles, including marching and concert bands
  • Strong classroom and rehearsal management skills
  • Ability to organize complex events, schedules, and performances
  • Knowledge of marching band design, drill coordination, and field performance techniques
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to motivate students in a rigorous performance environment
  • Ability to integrate technology into music instruction and production planning
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Music Education or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Alabama Class B Professional Educator Certificate in Music (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and pass required background checks
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience directing high school marching and concert bands
  • Strong background in instrumental performance and ensemble leadership
  • Experience with marching band drill design and show coordination
  • Piano proficiency and/or secondary instrument proficiency
  • Experience preparing students for adjudicated events, assessments, or competitions
