Job Description

A joyful and encouraging atmosphere Strong relationships with students and families A collaborative, supportive team culture Clear communication and consistency A commitment to growth—for our students and ourselves Duties and Responsibilities Assessing student aims and goals, then creating a supportive teaching plan Helping students sharpen technique, sight reading, performance, theory, and ear training skills Following the Piano Adventures curriculum (or equivalent curriculum on other instruments) and implementing the curriculum with enthusiasm and creativity Structuring individual lessons based on a balance between student goals and curriculum consistency Prioritizing mentorship and connection alongside music-learning Keeping a positive attitude aimed at joy and growth Showing up at least five minutes early for scheduled lessons as shown on Google calendar, volunteering at recitals, and conducting group makeup classes a few times a year (based on the percentage of students you have) Motivating students, especially when they experience setbacks Keeping lesson notes for the student via PracticeSpace (the studio practice app) Communication with students/parents is sometimes necessary, in which case all correspondence will be via the teacher's Little Bird Music email account Keeping a clean work space and respectfully treating studio instruments, furniture, and equipment Honoring the confidentiality of the employer, student/parent, and student progress information Maintaining professional appearance and interaction with students at all times (watching what you say around students and never physically touching them) Respecting studio policies, the employee handbook, and lines of communications, including having parents communicate with the director about anything related to scheduling, payment, policies, or studio conduct Thoroughly reading all email correspondence from Little Bird Music and being responsible for understanding the content of the message Honoring Little Bird Music's non-solicitation agreement: the teacher shall neither directly nor indirectly solicit business as to products or services competitive with those of Little Bird Music based on information from the customer lists. Teachers shall not conduct private lessons or other business with the Little Bird Music's students/clients outside of the employment agreement. In other words, the teacher may not solicit Little Bird Music students to join the employee's private studio or teaching practice. Qualifications B.A., B.M., or minor in Music, working towards a music degree, or college-level music courses taken Ability to pass a background check via LiveScan with Nevada County. Valid driver's license and clear driving record Competency in performance, technique, music theory, sight reading, and ear training skills Previous teaching experience working as a music teacher with children preferred, though not required Ability to exercise patience, kindness, and respect at all times Strong motivational skills Ability to identify strengths and weaknesses and communicate feedback in a supportive, positive manner Creativity and interest in utilizing new teaching strategies and technologies. Interest in being involved with additional studio events, projects, and continuing education as needed Excellent written/oral communication and interpersonal skills Working Conditions This job requires a person to work with individual students back-to-back for several hours at a time (meals and lunch breaks will be built into the schedule). Lessons typically take place midweek during the after school hours or on Sundays. Students do most of the playing, though the instructor will often play/model for the student as needed. Pay and Benefits of Working at Little Bird Music Pay starts at $45/hour with room for growth. This is a part-time, At-Will W2 position. Training, mentorship, and curriculum support is available for candidates with partial experience or for those new to the field. There are opportunities to earn more through subbing. Little Bird Music provides all administrative support, scheduling, tuition collection, marketing, a roster of students, a beautiful studio space and piano, curriculum materials, insurance, and a friendly, loving work environment. Policies are in place to protect the teacher. The teacher gets paid even when students do not show up. The first 90 days of employment is a training period for new employees. This is a chance for you to get to know Little Bird Music. It is also an opportunity for us to get to know you. During the training period, your work performance and attendance will be reviewed by the director. At the successful conclusion of your 90-day training period, you will receive a formal performance evaluation session with the director.
