Aug 31, 2026 Job Description Position begins 2026•2027 SY Barnstable Public Schools Middle School Choral Teacher Barnstable Intermediate School Barnstable Public Schools is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Middle School Choral Teacher to join the Performing Arts team at Barnstable Intermediate School. The ideal candidate will build and sustain a thriving choral program for grades 6-7, fostering a love of vocal music, ensemble performance, and musical literacy in a diverse and engaged student community. In addition to choral instruction, the successful candidate will bring enthusiasm for the broader performing arts, supporting theatre experiences during the school day and contributing to the school's vibrant co-curricular life. This is an exciting opportunity to shape young performers, collaborate with a dedicated arts faculty, and make a lasting impact on students at a critical stage of their development.
JOB GOAL
In a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth, the Middle School Music & Theatre Teacher will: Help students learn subject matter, skills, attitudes, and appreciations that are appropriate to their individual needs and levels of learning, contributing to their development as mature, able, and responsible young adults. Discover and develop students' special talents in both choral music, general music, and theatrical performance. Organize and deliver a robust choral program as the primary area of instruction, with integrated support for theatre and elective music education during the school day. Courses may include chorus, general music, piano, introduction to theatre, or other performing arts courses as assigned. Support and lead the Drama Club as an after-school co-curricular activity, including the coordination and production of at least one major theatrical production per year. Winter and Spring performances and support of extracurricular choral competitions and regional events.
QUALIFICATIONS
Possess appropriate Massachusetts certification and degree(s) in Music Education; coursework or experience in Theatre Education is strongly preferred. Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development based on formal learning and/or practical experience. Show experience or demonstrated interest in directing theatrical productions at the middle school level. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Committee may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO
Building Principal, Barnstable Intermediate School This position also receives ongoing feedback, instructional guidance, and program direction from the Performing Arts Department Head, who oversees the K-12 Performing Arts program district-wide. The teacher is expected to communicate regularly with both the Building Principal and the Performing Arts Department Head regarding program goals, student progress, scheduling, and co-curricular activities.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Child Growth and Development Consider the interest level and attention span of middle school students in all music and theatre learning activities. Make allowances for differences in intellectual and artistic maturity levels within class groups. Recognize indicators of exceptional or struggling performance and seek appropriate referrals. Use vocabulary appropriate to middle school students in both musical and theatrical contexts. Apply knowledge of social, physical, mental, and emotional traits as a basis for curriculum design. Display initiative and creativity in designing learning activities across choral and theatre disciplines. Develop and implement a comprehensive choral program, teaching vocal technique, music theory, and sight-reading skills. Plan and conduct rehearsals, performances, and concerts throughout the school year. Provide introductory and ongoing theatre education during the school day, including elements of acting, stagecraft, script analysis, production design, and performance practice. Collaborate with other music and arts teachers to coordinate programs, events, and shared curricular goals. Communicate regularly with parents and school administration regarding the choral program, theatre courses, and Drama Club activities. Planning and Evaluating Student Learning Plan a long-range and short-range instructional program consistent with school, team, and district curriculum — encompassing both choral and theatre coursework. Develop unit plans with defined goals and outcomes; maintain weekly lesson plans with clear objectives and activities. Prepare a substitute lesson plan that allows for continuity of instruction in both music and theatre contexts. Diagnose learning needs of students using appropriate instruments and formative assessment tools. Use results of unit or weekly assessments to continue or modify student learning plans. Provide instruction in the skills and processes necessary for learning each subject being taught. Inform students of long-range and weekly goals and objectives. Ensure clear, objective, and timely progress reports are provided to students and parents. Maintain appropriate records and administer standardized assessments as required. Use outside assignments to enrich or reinforce curriculum objectives. Classroom Management Organize the physical environment to ensure the basic comfort, health, and safety of students in both the music classroom and any performance or production spaces. Create a climate conducive to each lesson, whether in a choral rehearsal, theatre class, or drama production setting. Encourage students to participate in the development of positive, consistent rules of behavior and self-discipline. Conduct routine and clerical responsibilities with efficiency, accuracy, and promptness. Cooperate with colleagues in sharing space and materials, including rehearsal and stage areas. Use the instructional program, where appropriate, to encourage citizenship, collaboration, and responsibility. Manage full use of class time for instruction and learning. Utilize community resources where appropriate, including partnerships with arts organizations and local theatre groups. Seek the support of parents, resource staff, and administrators as needed to support classroom and production management. Co-Curricular and Production Responsibilities Lead the Drama Club as an after-school activity, meeting on a regular schedule determined in collaboration with the Building Principal and Performing Arts Department Head. Direct and manage at least one major theatrical production per school year, overseeing all aspects including casting, rehearsal scheduling, set design coordination, costuming, technical production, and performance. Work collaboratively with students, parents, and colleagues to produce high-quality theatrical experiences accessible to all students regardless of experience level. Coordinate production logistics including venue scheduling, program materials, ticketing, and event promotion in consultation with the Performing Arts Department Head. Maintain compliance with all district policies related to student supervision, facilities use, and after-school programming. Interpersonal Relationships Demonstrate and reinforce mutual respect among students. Use positive reinforcement and encouragement with students. Cooperate with fellow teachers, administrators, and other staff to maintain a positive school climate. Listen to and respect the opinions of other staff. Communicate effectively with staff and parents. Foster tolerance and understanding of ethnic, cultural, racial, and religious differences. Professional Responsibilities Participate in curriculum development or review across performing arts disciplines. Improve and maintain professional competence through in-service training, formal coursework, and professional reading. Share ideas, materials, and methods with colleagues. Protect the confidentiality of information about students. Utilize district and association channels constructively for solving problems or grievances. Use oral and written English correctly in all professional contexts. Accept, consider, and respond constructively to suggestions and feedback from the Building Principal and the Performing Arts Department Head. Participate in formal and informal observation and evaluation cycles as outlined by Massachusetts DESE standards, receiving feedback from both the supervising Principal and the Performing Arts Department Head. Cooperate in the development and support of school and system policies. Personal Set a strong example of professionalism, self-regulation, and enthusiasm. Display a genuine personal interest in students as individuals. Maintain good humor, enthusiasm, initiative, and integrity with students, staff, and parents. Cooperate with administrators, staff, parents, and students in developing and supporting school activities. Exercise good judgment in all professional settings. Other duties as assigned by the Principal or Performing Arts Department Head.
