Title:
Band and General Music Teacher, Wayland Middle School Position Summary:
We are seeking a passionate and versatile Band and General Music Instructor to join our vibrant, arts-supported community. In this role, you will foster a foundational love and understanding of music in general music classes while simultaneously directing and elevating our advanced performers in grade-level concert bands and specialized jazz ensembles. As a key collaborator within our dedicated K-12 performing arts department, you will design engaging curricula, lead dynamic rehearsals, and showcase student talent in community performances. The ideal candidate balances strong instrumental pedagogy with a warm, inclusive teaching style that empowers both the beginner discovering their first instrument and the experienced musician aiming for excellence. Duties and Responsibilities (Not limited to): Design and deliver engaging, standards-based lessons for diverse learners, focusing on music theory, music history, world music, keyboarding, ukulele, or digital music production. Conduct and instruct concert bands, focusing on fundamental instrumental techniques, ensemble balance, intonation, and sight-reading skills. Adapt repertoire and instructional methods to accommodate varying skill levels in general music to advanced players in jazz band. Select a diverse, high-quality, and grade-appropriate repertoire for concert and jazz ensembles that challenges students while ensuring successful performances. Maintain a structured, supportive, and high-energy classroom environment that builds student confidence and fosters a collaborative ensemble culture. Coordinate routine maintenance and emergency repairs for woodwind, brass, percussion, and rhythm section instruments. Plan, promote, and execute school concerts, evening performances, and community showcase events throughout the school year. Prepare concert and jazz bands for local, regional, or state music festivals, evaluations, and competitions. Actively recruit elementary students into the middle school band program and guide eighth-graders through the transition to high school music programs.
Qualifications:
MA DESE Licensure or eligibility 5-8 in applicable field Dual licensure in Special Education or ESL highly desirable SEI Endorsement Citizenship, residency, or valid work visa required Strong understanding of pre/adolescent academic, social, and emotional development Knowledge of student-centered teaching practices and heterogeneous classroom instruction Familiarity with Massachusetts Standards-Based curriculum, UDL principles, and SEL supports Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills\ Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Cultural Competency:
Experience with diverse populations and a strong commitment to Wayland's goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Bilingual skills desirable
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in education or a related area required Master's degree preferred Music Education degree preferred Experience teaching in a diverse public middle school preferred Experience working with students with disabilities/special abilities preferred Experience working with students who are English language learners preferred Experience with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Classroom, etc.) and PowerSchool preferred, but will train the right candidate Spanish bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply, as a Spanish immersion program exists at the middle school level. Salary Range:
Salary is determined in accordance with the WEA-A Salary Scale and is based on years of relevant, licensed experience as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Jazz band responsibilities are after school and have a stipend.
Work Schedule:
