Job Summary:
The Department of Music at Colby College invites applications for a temporary part-time Applied Music Instructor in Trumpet beginning in the fall semester of 2026. This is a one semester appointment with the possibility of renewal for a maximum of one additional semester. The Applied Music Instructor provides individualized trumpet instruction to students enrolled in the music program and contributes to the department's performance ensembles. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence in both performance and instruction and will support the department's efforts to foster a vibrant musical community on campus. In addition to teaching applied trumpet lessons, the instructor will perform as Principal Trumpet with Colby Symphony Orchestra and Colby Wind Ensemble, as determined by ensemble repertoire each semester. Instruction and Student Development Provide applied trumpet instruction to undergraduate students through individual, in-person, lessons Support student musical development through coaching, mentorship, and performance preparation Evaluate student progress and provide feedback consistent with departmental expectations Ensemble Participation Perform as Principal Trumpet with the Colby Symphony Orchestra and the Colby Wind Ensemble, depending on ensemble repertoire Attend and participate in scheduled orchestra and wind ensemble rehearsals as required by the semester's performance schedule Departmental Engagement Contribute to the Music Department's effort to recruit and attract qualified student musicians to the college Participate in departmental activities that support student engagement and performance opportunities Position Qualifications Education and/or experience: Demonstrated experience performing trumpet at a professional or advanced collegiate level Experience teaching trumpet lessons to students at the collegiate or pre-professional level preferred Demonstrated excellence in trumpet performance Ability to provide effective, individualized instruction to undergraduate students Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students within a collegiate music program Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment Physical/Mental Demands The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here reflect what is typically needed to perform the essential functions of this position and what may be experienced while carrying out those duties. In general, most roles involve lifting up to 10 pounds regularly, with some positions requiring occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds or more, in more physically demanding roles, up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements for this position include the ability to see clearly at close and far distances and to adjust focus as needed. The noise level is generally moderate; however, there may be occasional moments of louder sounds depending on campus activity.
