General Music Teaching Position Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Music Education or a related field. Valid Indiana state teaching certification in instrumental music grades 6-12. Experience working with middle school students in a band setting is preferred. Strong knowledge of instrumental techniques, instrumental pedagogy, and music theory. Excellent conducting and rehearsal management skills. Strong communication, organizational, and leadership abilities. Ability to inspire and motivate students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels.

Job Summary:

Thomas Jefferson Middle School has many students enrolled in one of our three music performance programs (band/choir/orchestra). Therefore, we are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Middle School Band Director to lead a dynamic band program. The ideal candidate will be responsible for instructing students in band instrumental music for grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. It requires organizing performances, and fostering music appreciation. This role requires strong leadership, musical expertise, and the ability to inspire and engage middle school students. This position also involves teaching General Music classes.

Key Responsibilities:

Plan, develop, and implement engaging band instruction for middle school students. Teach instrumental techniques, sight-reading, music theory, and performance skills. Direct the school band classes in a nurturing classroom environment, rehearsals, and performances, including concerts, competitions, and community events. Participate in ISSMA Solo and Ensemble and manage student entries. Encourage band students to participate in the Indiana Bandmasters Association sponsored events tailored to middle school students. Select appropriate repertoire that challenges and motivates students while accommodating varying skill levels. Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and growth. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning. Collaborate in the design and development of Band Leadership Development. Collaborate with other music teachers, administrators, school staff, and parents to support the music program. Coordinate logistics for performances, including venues, transportation, and attire. Prepare students for auditions, festivals, and other instrumental performance opportunities. Maintain accurate records of student progress, attendance, and participation. Manage band related budgets and equipment. Stay updated on best practices in instrumental music education and participate in professional development opportunities.
