Join Our Team - Position Summary The Peterson School of Music seeks an experienced and engaging piano instructor to join its Piano Area Faculty. The instructor will provide high-quality instruction to students ages 5 and up, from beginner to advanced levels, while contributing to a collaborative and high-performing teaching environment. This role includes delivering weekly lessons aligned with the academic calendar, preparing students for performances and assessments, and supporting Conservatory audition processes. The instructor will also build and maintain a strong private studio, communicate regularly with students and families, and contribute to departmental and school-wide initiatives. This is a part-time position; compensation is commensurate with experience.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction & Student Development Provide individual piano instruction to students ranging from beginner to advanced levels Deliver a minimum of 38 lessons per academic year: 15 lessons in the fall semester 17 lessons in the spring semester Minimum of 6 lessons during the summer Present one studio recital each semester (fall and spring) Prepare students for performances, competitions, and auditions Program Participation & Evaluation Prepare students for and adjudicate, as applicable: Jury Examinations ÉtudeFest (fall semester only) Piano Technique Exam (spring semester only) Independent Study Participate in evaluating applicants for Conservatory piano auditions Studio Development & Communication Actively recruit and maintain a robust private studio Communicate regularly with students and families regarding progress and goals Assist students in preparing and recording audition and competition materials Manage lesson scheduling, attendance, and related administrative tasks Maintain timely and professional communication with families and staff Institutional Engagement Report to the Piano Area Chair and attend piano area events (e.g., juries, technique exams) Participate in departmental and school-wide activities Contribute to a collaborative and supportive faculty environment Perform additional duties as assigned by the Piano Area Chair
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in piano or related field Demonstrated evidence of effective teaching for beginning through advanced levels - minimum of 3 years of experience Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team Demonstrated English proficiency; Spanish or other language would be a strong asset. ONBOARDING REQUIREMENT
For instructors without an established track record in piano pedagogy and student outcomes, the School requires 10 hours of lesson observation as part of onboarding: 8 hours observing a senior piano instructor 2 hours observing a senior Suzuki string instructor Teaching may begin concurrently with the observation period, with review by the Piano Department Chair.
