Apr 24, 2026 Description The Snow Institute for the Study of Capitalism (SISC), a teaching and research center dedicated to exploring the moral and political foundations of a free society at Clemson University, invites applications for two positions as Lyceum Faculty Scholars in Moral and Political Philosophy to begin in August 2026. These positions are full-time (nine month), non-tenure track positions, with preferred candidates to be hired at the rank of Lecturer. The Lyceum Faculty Scholar works with and teaches in the SISC's undergraduate Lyceum Program, which uses a "Great Books" approach to studying the history of liberty, capitalism, the American Founding, and the principles of moral character. The Lyceum Program is committed to pursuing four cardinal values: Truth, Wisdom, Freedom, and Merit. Responsibilities and Duties The teaching load for the Lyceum Faculty Scholars will typically be two to three courses each semester. The Lyceum Faculty Scholars will be expected to teach courses in moral and political philosophy or in a closely related secondary field (e.g., intellectual history or economic thought) as needed by the Lyceum Program. The Lyceum Faculty Scholars will also be expected to participate in the Lyceum Program's Socratic Tutoring program by serving as a faculty mentor to a small number of Lyceum Scholars each semester. Lyceum Faculty Scholars will also assist in the evaluation of Lyceum Scholar applications and the reading/editing of SISC material. Finally, the Lyceum Faculty Scholars must also participate in the activities of the Lyceum Program and the SISC. About ClemsonClemson University is the Land Grant University for the State of South Carolina and is located within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains 30 miles southwest of Greenville. Qualifications The Ph.D. degree (in hand or expected by the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year) is a required qualification. The SISC is particularly interested in candidates with an academic background in moral and political philosophy or intellectual history. Candidates should have an interest and expertise in at least one of the following areas: the classical-liberal tradition (particularly Locke, Montesquieu, or the Scottish Enlightenment), classical Greek and Roman moral/political thought, American political thought, or constitutional law.
