Our School Westerly School is an independent, non-sectarian kindergarten through 8th grade school focused on whole child education. Westerly School strives to recognize and meet the needs of every individual student to ignite within each child a lifelong love of learning as they discover their full and unique potential. Founded in 1991 by a group of parents who wanted to provide an alternative to the Long Beach Unified School District education, Westerly remains the only independent school in Long Beach. Westerly currently enrolls 165 students.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
We seek a full-time, experienced physical education support person to assist with athletic affairs in grades K-8. Working closely with the lead PE instructor, the aide will support the delivery of a comprehensive, developmentally appropriate PE curriculum emphasizing physical fitness, skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, belonging, and anti-bias/anti-racism, ensuring that all students feel encouraged, included, and supported in their physical education experience. Our physical education program focuses on movement, fitness, cooperative games, and sports fundamentals, fostering a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and wellness. The ideal candidate will support culturally responsive pedagogy and best practices while prioritizing student safety, personal growth, and social-emotional development. In addition to supporting physical education instruction, the aide will play an integral role in the K-8 faculty team, fostering and embodying Westerly's core values to motivate and support students in building confidence, resilience, and teamwork through movement and play.
The ideal candidate will:
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging both in their support practices and their relationships with students, colleagues, administrators, and families. Possess working knowledge of physical education curriculum and best practices for movement, fitness, and sports instruction for elementary and middle school students. Work collaboratively with the Westerly K-8 team to promote physical well-being, teamwork, and a love of movement in engaging and creative ways. Support students of all ability levels and contribute to an inclusive environment that encourages participation, sportsmanship, and personal growth. Understand the cognitive, social, and emotional development of elementary and middle school children, particularly as it relates to physical activity and motor skills development. Bring enthusiasm for working with children in a school setting; participate wholeheartedly in the life of the school; and conduct themselves professionally and warmly. Communicate clearly and reliably with colleagues and the lead instructor regarding student participation, behavior, and progress. Have familiarity with skill development, fitness programming, and cooperative games. Demonstrate a desire to continue learning and growing in a school environment.
Essential Duties:
Assist in the delivery of engaging, developmentally appropriate physical education lessons for students in grades K-8 under the direction of the lead instructor. Support a classroom environment of teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal responsibility in physical activities. Assist with the instruction of sports, fitness activities, and movement exercises while monitoring student safety and injury prevention. Support differentiated instruction to accommodate diverse learning styles, skill levels, and abilities. Assist in observing and documenting student participation and progress as directed. Help supervise and maintain the gymnasium, playground, and other PE spaces to ensure a safe and organized learning environment. Supervise and support students during transitions and recess as needed. Engage with students, colleagues, and parents to foster a strong sense of community and belonging.
Salary Range:
$20-26/hour based on experience
