Job Description
An Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher is a specialized educator dedicated to providing high-quality physical education services to students with diverse physical, cognitive, or emotional needs. This role focuses on modifying, adapting, and/or accommodating physical activities to ensure every student can participate safely and meaningfully in a PE curriculum. You will provide direct 1:1 or small group instruction and supervise paraprofessionals/aides assigned to the APE program in a variety of settings according to District-approved courses of study and curriculum, at a rate and level commensurate with established student expectancies and goals.
- Teaches adapted physical education to students in grades K-12 in an assigned school or on an itinerant assignment. In a regular secondary school may teach other classes for which appropriately credentialed, according to approved courses of study and at a rate and level commensurate with established expected student progress in accordance with existing federal and state mandates.
- Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings to develop an IEP for eligible students.
- Provides for continuous evaluation of student progress toward achievement of IEP goals.
- Screens and refers students for significant gross motor delays to appropriately access the least restrictive environment physical education program and provides suggestions for adaptations to classroom teachers.
- Assesses students for entry into and exit from adapted physical education programs.
- Teaches adapted physical education in a collaborative setting to students in early childhood and K-12 special education classrooms throughout the District.
- In cooperation with school and central office staff, plans the appropriate depth of content for long-range and short-term objectives for the adapted physical education program.
- Maintains proper control and a suitable learning environment in assigned classes; cooperates with school administration and staff in providing such control and environment in buildings and on the grounds.
- Maintains records for student attendance and student progress.
- Serves as a resource person to the administrators and teachers of the school to which assigned regarding supplies and equipment, supplementary motor development activities, staff development opportunities, special events, and current developments in policy, research, and methods in the area of adapted physical education.
- All other duties as assigned. Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university. Degree in physical education, kinesiology, or special education preferred.
- Appropriate state licensure, which may require additional endorsement in some states.
- Experience working with children with disabilities in an educational setting.
