MIDDLE SCHOOL PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER THE POSITION

Under general supervision, teaches one or more classes in the field of Physical Education to students in grades 6 through 8, assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates a flexible program and environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with each student's ability.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The duties listed are typical, but not exclusive: Teaches knowledge and skills in physical education to middle school students utilizing the course of study prescribed by the District approved curriculum. Instructs students in citizenship and basic physical education subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program, adapting daily schedules to accommodate weather conditions and to provide time for changing clothes, showers, instructions, exercise and physical activities. Develops written plans for instruction, demonstrates and explains basic skills, shows knowledge and strategies in sports, games, rhythms, fundamentals of body movement, and fitness. Provides individual and cooperative group instruction in order to adapt curriculum to the needs of the pupils with varying intellectual abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities. Exhibits appropriate conduct in the handling of student emergencies. Maintains school standards of pupil behavior required to provide an orderly and productive environment, in cooperation with the school administration. Instructs students in proper care and use of materials and equipment and organized storage areas and controls use of materials and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. Selects and requisitions materials, equipment, books, etc., which support the District curriculum, and maintains inventory records. Maintains professional competence through in-service education provided by the District and/or in self-selected professional growth activities. Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method he/she will be evaluated in conformance with District guidelines and state law. Communicates with parents, counselors, teachers and advisors on student progress, attending meetings designed to assist in individual student development. Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities, including supervision of students when out of the classroom.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDE

Valid California Credential or license authorizing service in grade levels and areas assigned. Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, including all courses to meet credential requirements.

Training and Experience:

Student teaching, internship, or full time teaching experience.

Personal Qualities:

Appearance, grooming and personality, which establish a desirable example for students. Ability to meet District standards for physical and mental health. Above average recommendations from student teaching supervisors and other professionals who have observed the characteristics, scholastic attainment and classroom performance of the teacher.
