Job Description
Summa Academy is seeking a part time Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Specialist to serve as the sole provider of physical education services for students with disabilities across our elementary and middle school campuses. This role is responsible for designing and delivering individualized, developmentally appropriate physical education instruction for students with IEPs, supporting motor development, physical fitness, and participation in movement-based learning. The APE Specialist will work collaboratively with classroom teams and related service providers to ensure physical education is accessible, engaging, and aligned with each student's unique needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as the designated physical education instructor for 6 classrooms at our elementary campus and 3 classrooms at our middle school campus. Conduct motor skills and fitness assessments for students with disabilities and determine eligibility for APE services. Develop and implement individualized goals and objectives for physical education as part of each student's IEP. Provide direct instruction in adapted physical education, using evidence-based methods and safe practices. Create and lead structured, inclusive movement activities that support student engagement and development. Document service delivery and progress; provide updates and reports for IEP meetings. Participate in IEP meetings and collaborate with special education teachers, related service providers, and families. Recommend adaptive equipment or modifications to ensure full student access to physical education. Monitor safety and adjust activities as needed to accommodate student behaviors or physical needs. Contribute to a positive and supportive school environment by modeling enthusiasm, patience, and professionalism. Travel between campuses and manage an efficient multi-site schedule, ensuring services are delivered in accordance with IEP service minutes and compliance requirements. Provide leadership and management to ensure that the core values are always put into practice.Work Environment & Physical Demands:
The position typically operates on-site, in-person, in a school environment with business hours, Monday-Friday, 8:00-5:00 pm. The employee may be required to intervene and de-escalate physical and emotional outbursts by students, including such behaviors as kicking, spitting, hitting, scratching, biting, running, and cursing; the employee must be able to run quickly for brief spurts. While performing the duties and responsibilities of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear, stand, move and walk at a brisk pace, sit, and use hands and arms to handle, feel and reach. The position requires the ability to accompany students anywhere on school premises, including supporting with basic needs The employee is occasionally required to stoop or kneel and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
