Full-Time | 191 Days Position Summary James Irwin Charter Middle School is seeking a full-time Physical Education and Character Teacher for the upcoming school year. This position includes teaching 6th grade Physical Education and 7th grade Character classes , playing a vital role in promoting student health, fitness, and personal development. The ideal candidate will deliver engaging PE instruction while reinforcing character education through structured lessons and daily interactions. Instruction at JICMS follows the Direct Instruction / Explicit Instruction model , ensuring clarity, consistency, and high student engagement. Key Responsibilities Teach Physical Education to 6th grade students Teach 7th grade Character classes aligned with school values Implement Direct Instruction (Explicit Instruction) strategies Develop and deliver structured, engaging lesson plans Promote physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship Maintain a safe and organized classroom/gym environment Monitor and assess student progress and participation Maintain accurate student records and communicate with parents as needed Enforce school expectations, including behavior and dress code Collaborate with staff to support student success and school culture Participate in school duties (study hall, events, occasional after-school activities) Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred Ability to meet Colorado Department of Education "In-Field" requirements (degree, coursework, or Praxis exam) Strong classroom management skills Ability to work effectively with middle school students Passion for physical fitness, student development, and character education Strong communication and organizational skills Willingness to be coached and implement feedback Preferred Qualifications Experience teaching Physical Education or coaching Familiarity with Direct Instruction / Explicit Instruction Experience working with adolescents in a school or athletic setting Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to lead structured, high-energy classes Ability to motivate and engage students of varying skill levels Strong time management and organization Positive, solution-oriented mindset Ability to build strong relationships with students and staff Minimum Qualifications & Salary Bachelor's degree preferred (reflected in $45,000-$55,000 range). Candidates who meet Colorado ESSA "In-Field" requirements without a bachelor's degree may be considered starting at $35,000. To qualify as "In-Field," candidates must meet one of the following in the subject area: endorsement, degree, 36 credit hours, or passing Praxis exam.
