About Athenian Academy Athenian Academy Charter School is a K-8 public charter school in Pinellas County, Florida with 25 years of service to its community. We are a school built on a student-centered philosophy that prizes the whole child — academic achievement, physical wellness, creative expression, and character development. Our staff culture is collaborative and mission-driven, and our athletics program is one of the school's most celebrated strengths. We are seeking a Physical Education Teacher who brings energy, professionalism, and a genuine love of movement and student development to our campus. Position Summary The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for delivering a structured, engaging, and developmentally appropriate physical education program for students in grades K-8. This role supports the school's whole-child philosophy by promoting physical fitness, healthy habits, sportsmanship, teamwork, and lifelong wellness. The PE Teacher will collaborate with school administration and coaching staff to create a cohesive athletic culture that extends from the classroom to after-school programs. Key Responsibilities Instruction & Curriculum Plan and deliver standards-aligned physical education lessons for K-8 students that develop motor skills, physical fitness, and health literacy Design age-appropriate units of instruction that progress in complexity across grade levels Integrate Florida's Physical Education Standards (SHAPE America framework) into daily instruction Maintain accurate records of student participation, fitness assessments, and progress Adapt instruction to meet the needs of students with IEPs, 504 plans, and varying ability levels School Culture & Athletics Support and collaborate with the school's athletics director and coaching staff to build a unified athletic culture Model and reinforce positive sportsmanship, teamwork, personal responsibility, and respect in all activities Contribute to school events, spirit days, and wellness initiatives that reflect the school's community values Maintain a safe, inclusive, and encouraging physical environment for all students Professional Responsibilities Maintain a safe, clean, and organized PE facility and equipment inventory Communicate proactively with classroom teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress and wellness goals Participate in school-wide professional development, staff meetings, and planning sessions Fulfill assigned duties (e.g., supervision, lunch monitoring) as scheduled Adhere to all school policies, professional conduct standards, and Florida Department of Education requirements Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or a related field Valid Florida teaching certificate in Physical Education (or eligibility for certification) Experience teaching physical education in a K-8 or similar setting Strong classroom management skills and ability to engage students across a wide range of ages and abilities Commitment to student safety, inclusive practices, and the whole-child philosophy Preferred Experience coaching youth sports or working with a school athletics program CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain) Familiarity with fitness assessment tools (e.g., FitnessGram)
