Job Description

Position Summary:
The Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher provides specialized physical education instruction to students with disabilities who require modifications to participate in general physical education. The APE teacher assesses students' needs, designs individualized programs, collaborates with IEP teams, and promotes students' motor development, physical fitness, and social-emotional well-being.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct formal and informal assessments to determine students' motor skills, fitness levels, and physical education needs. Develop and implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals related to physical education. Adapt and modify physical education activities and environments to ensure accessibility and success for students with disabilities. Provide direct APE instruction in individual, small group, or inclusive settings. Collaborate with general physical education teachers to support inclusion and appropriate accommodations. Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and provide data-driven reports. Participate in IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and parent conferences as needed. Train and support paraprofessionals, aides, and staff involved in physical education. Promote the development of motor skills, self-esteem, teamwork, and independence in physical activities. Maintain appropriate equipment and ensure a safe environment for students. Stay current with best practices in APE and professional development requirements.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education, Kinesiology, or related field. State certification/licensure in Physical Education with Adaptive Physical Education endorsement or specialization. Valid teaching credential as required by state law. Knowledge of IDEA and special education laws and processes.
Preferred:
Master's degree in Adapted Physical Education or related area. Experience working with students with a range of disabilities in a school setting.
Skills and Abilities:
Strong knowledge of motor development and adapted physical activity strategies. Ability to modify curriculum and equipment to meet diverse student needs. Strong communication and collaboration skills with students, staff, and families. Organizational skills to manage schedules, IEP documentation, and assessments. Patience, creativity, and a positive attitude toward inclusive education.
Working Conditions:
School gymnasiums, outdoor fields, and classrooms. Frequent physical activity and lifting of equipment. Interaction with students with varying physical, sensory, and behavioral needs.
Pay:
$55,000.00 - $68,000.00 per year
