Teaching Full Job Description Position Summary:
The Lead Teacher is a key leadership role responsible for maintaining a safe, nurturing, and high-quality learning environment at BAHIA's state-contracted bilingual After School Program, Sol de Berkeley. This position serves as the first line of accountability for child safety, active supervision, and compliance with licensing regulations, ensuring adherence to California Community Care Licensing (CCL) and Title V standards. The Lead Teacher supervises instructional teaching assistants and aides, providing real-time coaching, monitoring staff compliance, and addressing safety concerns. This role functions as a floor administrator, actively reinforcing best practices, procedures, and policies to support program excellence.Key Responsibilities:
1. Active Supervision & Child Safety (Primary Responsibility) Conduct routine staff ratio and supervision checks throughout the day to ensure compliance with California Community Care Licensing (CCL) regulations. Ensure 100% active supervision at all times, including transitions, outdoor play, and mealtimes. Ensure that procedures are followed at all times. Immediately correct and document any violations related to supervision or child safety. Partner with the Site Supervisor to address staff for non-compliance and ensure timely corrective actions. Serve as a mandated reporter and immediately escalate any concerns about child safety or welfare. 2. Classroom Leadership & Compliance Implement a bilingual, developmentally appropriate Inquiry-based curriculum aligned with California Early Learning Foundations. Maintain a structured and safe classroom environment that supports positive behavior management. Complete daily safety and sanitation check to ensure all learning environments meet health and safety standards. Ensure licensing compliance for record-keeping, staff-child ratios, and emergency preparedness. 3. Child Development & Family Engagement DRDP Assessment knowledge Engage families through regular communication, parent-teacher conferences, and workshops. Model positive interactions and reinforce children's rights, emotional well-being, and respect for diversity. Attend and participate in all BAHIA events to foster community engagement. 4. Team Accountability & Staff Mentorship Provide real-time coaching and support to assistant teachers and aides to uphold supervision and safety standards. Act as a leader on the floor, ensuring smooth daily operations and assisting the Site Supervisor with staff oversight. Train and reinforce active supervision techniques, such as zoning, scanning, and headcounts. Support the Site Supervisor in mentoring new hires and implementing classroom best practices. Ensure timely and organized completion of all reports, documentation, and assigned duties.Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
Preferable any combination equivalent to 24 early and/or school age care and curriculum units, Associate Arts in Early Childhood, bachelor's degree, with major in child/human development/early childhood education, liberal studies, and including courses needed to meet credential requirements and student teaching classroom experience. California Child Development Teacher Permit (or higher). Current Pediatric CPR/First Aid Certification and Mandated Reporter Training.Experience:
At least 3 years of experience in a licensed preschool setting, preferably in a bilingual or state-funded program. Experience managing child safety and licensing compliance is strongly preferred.Skills & Abilities:
Strong knowledge of Community Care Licensing (CCL) and Title V regulations for preschool programs. Ability to monitor and correct staff in a professional and supportive manner. Bilingual (English & Spanish preferred). Excellent crisis management, communication, and leadership skills.Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, stand for extended periods, and actively engage with children. Willingness to work both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Ability to bend and stand for extended periods of time - working with children among low chairs and tables, trip hazards, and slippery surfacesJob Type:
