This position would also lead a before school middle school choir twice weekly. The position requires collaboration with Theater Arts and Instrumental Music Teachers for school-wide performances throughout the school year. A weekly after-school Musical Theater class is also sometimes co-taught with the Theater Arts Teacher.

education:
Possession of a Baccalaureate or higher degree preferred with emphasis in elementary music education, a subject matter field commonly taught in the elementary grades, or closely related field areas.
Certification Preferred:
Possession of a California credential authorizing service as a teacher of elementary grade pupils.
experience:
Preferred successful completion of student teaching at a recognized college or university or two years of regular full-time elementary classroom teaching experience.
Knowledge of:
Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies pertaining to teaching and instruction of elementary music pupils; child growth and development and behavior characteristics of the elementary child; educational curriculum and instructional goals and objectives, and the educational trends and research findings pertaining to elementary music educational programming; behavior management and behavior shaping strategies, techniques and methods, and conflict resolution procedures; socioeconomic and cultural background differences of the general school population.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, develop, and conduct a comprehensive teaching and instruction program for pupils in elementary and middle school music, or a combination of these grades; provide effective learning experiences for pupils from a wide range of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds and with varying mental, social and emotional levels; effectively assess the educational needs of pupils, and design, develop, and implement sound individualized educational plans; provide an attractive, inviting and stimulating learning environment; perform research and development activities pertaining to music curriculum and instruction programs, pilot projects, and innovative programs designed to enhance pupil educational opportunities and experiences; comply with the school's customer service standards, as outlined in school policy.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The competent teacher will: Have a thorough understanding of the requirements related to state standards in music education Be capable of developing course goals related to state standards in music education Use techniques and introduce appropriate methods of teaching that enable all students to meet the state and district benchmarks for music education Provide a variety of classroom techniques and methods Promote high levels of achievement in relation to individual student ability Use techniques and methodologies appropriate to student ability Use adopted school curriculum and appropriate supplementary materials Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to use research-based principles of effective instruction Organize instruction using learning objectives with clearly defined student outcomes Employ teaching strategies congruent with planned student outcomes Monitor student learning and pace instruction accordingly Develop and maintain an environment conducive to effective student learning Develop written rules of classroom behavior and communicate those rules to all students Enforce written rules for classroom behavior Communicate course goals and academic expectations to students and parents Provide for the health and safety of students in all instructional settings Prepare effectively for class Prepare daily lesson plans Provide instruction predicated on course goals and objectives Develop and communicate appropriate grading standards to students Establish written grading standards that are clear and incorporate a variety of graded activities Assure that grading standards are explained and available to parents Develop and maintain positive interpersonal relationships Model personal behaviors of honesty, fairness, courtesy and consideration Maintain a cooperative relationship with administration, staff, students and parents Share appropriate information with parents and with other staff members Provide documentation of students' progress Provide timely and accurate feedback/documentation to students, parents and appropriate staff members Maintain appropriate records of student performance Build motivation and interest in learning Exhibit personal interest and encourage student interest in the subject area related to music education Maintain a current awareness of activities in music education Maintain an ongoing personal program of professional growth and development Develop and implement annually an approved plan for professional growth and development Identify and request to attend professional workshop activities Participate in school sponsored inservice offerings appropriate to assignment Maintain an attitude of helping in the total school atmosphere Be willing to be involved in student activities of the total school outside of regular classroom, i.e., assemblies, performances, concerts, field trips, and programs Oversee activities related to musical group performances and trips Plan concert programs, including facilities requests Assure that trips are planned and chaperoned in accordance with school policies
