Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Pre-K Assistant provides support for the instructional program within assigned Pre-Kindergarten (4- and 5-year-olds) classroom with specific responsibility for working with individual and/or small groups of students; and providing clerical support to teacher/s and staff. This position reports to the Principal.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments (e.g. read stories, providing writing assistance, reinforce language skills, numbers, alphabet, computer learning programs, etc.) for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards. Communicates with teachers for the purpose of administering classroom assignments and/or implementing classroom objectives. Provide support to teachers in the instructional process and in evaluating progress. Monitors individual and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g. classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment. Reports observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. accidents, fights, appropriate and/or inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, safety conditions, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and/or administrative personnel. All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.
KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS
One of the below requirements must be met: Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution. OR Have completed two (2) years of college coursework (sixty [60] semester hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution. OR 3. Have passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Previous employment in Pre-K program preferred. Makes recommendations or decisions which usually affect the entire department/school. Must hold or be eligible for a GaPSC-issued Paraprofessional License. Eligibility is based on the education requirements outlined in Formal Education.
Note:
The Certification Team will apply for the Paraprofessional License upon hire. Requires regular, frequent communication with internal school administrative personnel. Requires regular, frequent communication with different constituencies: external agencies, parents, community etc. Excellent classroom management required. Normal classroom/school setting. Must be able to stand and walk approximately seven (7) to seven and one-half (7½) hours per day. Light duty - On most occasions sitting at a desk or table; intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping. Light lifting or carrying; twenty (20) lbs. or less.
NOTE:
This is a grade 16, 190 day position that pays for experience Stes 6 - 8.
