This position is ideal for an experienced early childhood professional who is ready to support daily operations, mentor staff, ensure regulatory compliance, and help create a positive, high-quality learning environment for children, families, and employees. Position Summary The Assistant Director works closely with the Director to oversee daily center operations, maintain compliance with licensing and quality standards, support staff development, manage enrollment and child records, and ensure a safe and nurturing environment for all children. In the Director's absence, the Assistant Director assumes leadership responsibilities for the center. Qualifications Applicants must meet Illinois DCFS requirements for a Director position, including: Associate degree in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or equivalent coursework as defined by DCFS Minimum of 64 semester hours in any discipline with at least 21 semester hours in Child Development, Early Childhood Education, or Early Childhood Special Education Gateways to Opportunity Level I Illinois Director Credential OR 3 semester hours of college credit in administration, leadership, or management, OR 3 points of credential-approved training in administration, leadership, or management Ability to meet all DCFS background check requirements Strong leadership, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills Experience supervising or mentoring staff preferred Passion for early childhood education and supporting children's development Application Requirements To be considered for this position, applicants should submit: A current professional resume detailing relevant education, experience, and leadership responsibilities Three professional references (required during the interview process) College transcripts (required during the interview process) Please note: We strongly prefer a professional resume uploaded as a PDF or Word document rather than an Indeed-generated resume. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Program Operations Support the Director in the daily operation of the center Assume responsibility for the center in the Director's absence Ensure compliance with DCFS licensing standards, ExceleRate Illinois requirements, CACFP regulations, and Growth policies Attend board meetings, staff meetings, trainings, and other required meetings Assist with risk management, emergency preparedness plans, drills, and health and safety procedures Staff Support & Development Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, and orientation of new staff Conduct staff observations and provide coaching, mentoring, and support Assist with staff scheduling and classroom coverage Ensure proper child-to-staff ratios are maintained at all times Model and teach effective classroom management practices Child Records & Enrollment Maintain accurate and up-to-date child files Process registrations and enrollment paperwork in a timely manner Ensure emergency forms, physicals, agreements, and required documentation remain current Maintain and manage the center waitlist Compliance & Administrative Responsibilities Assist with monthly reporting and required documentation Gather and maintain attendance records, sign-in logs, CACFP paperwork, and other required records Oversee child file compliance and enrollment processes Support CACFP and kitchen supervision responsibilities Family & Community Engagement Help maintain positive relationships with children and families Increase family engagement through social media and communication efforts Assist with maintaining and updating the center's Facebook page and sharing classroom activities Classroom & Facility Support Actively engage with children and support classrooms as needed Ensure classrooms and common areas remain clean, organized, safe, and welcoming Assist with maintenance and facility-related needs What We're Looking For The ideal candidate is: A strong team player and leader Organized and detail-oriented Comfortable balancing administrative and classroom responsibilities Passionate about supporting teachers and families Committed to maintaining a high-quality early childhood program Benefits Paid time off Paid holidays Flex-Time Employee Discount As a member of the leadership team, occasional evening meetings, board meetings, trainings, or special events may be required.
