Job Description
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Maintains a valid Massachusetts DESE school nurse certification that is appropriate forthe grade level and subject area assigned. (Bachelors degree or higher from anaccredited college or university)2. Highly Qualified as per Massachusetts Department of Elementary and SecondaryEducation (DESE)3. Licensure as a registered nurse by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing(BORN)4. Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to: administrators, parents, teachers, students, other school staff and visitors5. Possess good communication skills both verbal and written6. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities7. A sense of humor and a proven ability to work in a polite and friendly manner with all staffmembers, students, and with the larger educational community8. Building Principal and Director of School Health ServicesJOB GOAL
To coordinate the smooth and efficient operation of the school health services in order torealize the maximum positive impact on the education environment and student body.SUPERVISES
Students in health services and health aide as assignedPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
(include but are not limited to): 1. Utilizes the Nursing Process in providing care for students and staff for illness and/orinjuries occurring during the school day and files Injury Reporting form/ Student AccidentClaim Form per district protocol.2. Adheres to MA state regulations relative to responsibilities of the school nurse in themanagement of concussive injuries in the school setting.3. Maintains strict student/staff (patient) confidentiality at all times while consistentlypromoting professional nursing standards in individual practice, and with districtpolicy/procedure and protocol.4. Monitors school attendance/chronic absenteeism utilizing Continuous Quality (CQI)Improvement Strategies (including, but not limited to, strategizing with the school teamand working with/educating families on the critical importance of time on learning).5. Creates and maintains Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) for students withspecial medical concerns.6. Maintains comprehensive electronic school health records.4.9TITLE:

Functions as a mandated reporter and directly addresses/responds to student/familiesand school staff on any issues related to sexual/adolescent health, mental/behavioralhealth, self-harm, suicidality, bullying and/or substance use/abuse.10. Recognizes signs and symptoms of communicable diseases and reports to the Board ofHealth/Department of Public Health per district protocol.11. Maintains Basic Life Support Instructor Certification.12. Supervises any assigned certified nursing assistants (CNAs)/health aides.13. Follows individual student safety plans, IEPs, 504s, health care plans, etc.14. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment,materials, and facilities.15. Strives to participate in professional development opportunities to remain current in theeducational/nursing fields.16. Participates in activities that support the school-based Medicaid program.17. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, colleagues andparents/guardians concerning the health progress of students.18. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for health-related purposesoutside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonableterms.19. Implements the school districts strategic plan and individual school improvement plans.20. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.21. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others.22. Participates in activities that support the school-based Medicaid program.23.
