Job Description

Sudbury, MA • Part-time / As-needed About The Nature School of Sudbury The Nature School of Sudbury is a nature-based early childhood program rooted in exploration, curiosity, and connection to the land. Our classroom is the landscape of SVT's Wolbach Farm, where children learn and play across wetlands, forests, meadows, and open fields. In collaboration with the Sudbury Valley Trustees (https://www.svtweb.org/), a nonprofit land trust, we are fortunate to steward and learn from a rich and diverse natural environment each day. We believe that nature is a powerful teacher. Through child-led, play-based experiences outdoors, children develop resilience, confidence, creativity, and a deep sense of belonging in the natural world. Our program fosters meaningful relationships, between children, educators, families, and the land itself. We are committed to building an inclusive, welcoming community and strongly encourage applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences. Job Summary We are seeking a substitute teacher to join our team on an as-needed basis. This role is ideal for someone who is flexible, enjoys working outdoors in all weather, and is passionate about supporting young children's growth and exploration. Our highest priorities are educators who are passionate about working with young children and who feel a personal connection to nature, especially those who are inspired to share that connection with others. A Day in the Life Our program is completely outdoors, every day. Children ages 2-7 arrive ready to explore, and we set off together with backpacks into the forests, meadows, and wetlands of Wolbach Farm. Each day unfolds with a sense of wonder. We follow the rhythms of the seasons, watching buds open, listening for migrating birds, noticing ice melt into mud beneath our boots. Children are invited to slow down and observe both the big and small: towering trees overhead and tiny insects beneath a log. We read stories under the canopy of trees, sway in hammocks, and gather for songs and shared meals in the fresh air. There is time for splashing in brooks, building fairy homes, climbing, digging, and creating. Curiosity leads the way as children ask questions, test ideas, and make meaning through play. Through it all, teachers support connection, helping children build relationships with each other and with the natural world, while fostering confidence, resilience, and joy in being outdoors. Duties Support child-led, play-based learning in an outdoor setting Encourage exploration, curiosity, and respect for the natural world Help maintain a safe and supportive environment for all children Model positive behavior and guide children through conflict with care and respect Assist with daily routines including snacks, transitions, and toileting as needed Adapt to changing weather conditions and support children in doing the same Collaborate with lead teachers and staff to ensure continuity of care Communicate respectfully with children, families, and colleagues Qualifications Experience working with young children (early childhood or related field preferred) A genuine passion for working with children and being outdoors in all seasons Interest in or experience with nature-based education Strong communication and collaboration skills Ability to be flexible, observant, and responsive in a dynamic environment EEC certification is a plus but not required [Note on
