LEAD TEACHER
(PRESCHOOL)

8:00 AM - 4:30 PM (flexible based on program needs)
POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Teacher plans and implements developmentally appropriate curriculum, creates a prepared environment, observes and documents child development, and maintains a safe, nurturing classroom.
MICHIGAN LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
(R 400.8125) Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in any field of study
  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or Child Development Associate (CDA) credential (preferred)
  • 1 year experience in a licensed preschool setting
PLUS:
  • Valid Michigan Child Care Background Check clearance (R 400.8110)
  • CPR and First Aid certification (must be obtained within 90 days if not current)
  • Complete 16 hours annual professional development (R 400.8131)
  • Complete health and safety training within 90 days: ○ Prevention of shaken baby syndrome and child maltreatment ○ Recognition and reporting of child abuse and neglect ○ Prevention and control of infectious diseases
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Classroom Instruction:
⁠ ⁠ Plan and implement developmentally appropriate and engaging lessons ⁠ ⁠Foster a positive learning environment focused on curiosity, creativity, and respect Monitor, assess, and document student's progress ⁠ ⁠Knowledge of standardized testing procedures and assessment strategies Adapt curriculum to meet the needs of individual learners Integrate Sikh values and Punjabi heritage appropriately Create weekly lesson plans Adapt activities for diverse learners
Child Observation & Assessment:
  • Observe children and document developmental progress
  • Maintain anecdotal records
  • Complete developmental assessments per program schedule
  • Communicate child progress to families
  • Identify children who may need additional support
Classroom Management:
  • Maintain supervision of children at ALL times (R 400.8140)
  • Enforce positive discipline techniques (R 400.1902(3))
  • Manage classroom transitions and routines
  • Create and maintain calm, orderly environment
  • Model grace and courtesy
Health & Safety:
  • Conduct name-to-face attendance checks (R 400.8176)
  • Follow handwashing and hygiene protocols
  • Implement illness exclusion policies
  • Administer medication per signed authorization (R 400.1903(2))
  • Complete incident/accident reports within 24 hours
  • Participate in fire, tornado, and lockdown drills
Daily Routines:
  • Supervise arrival and dismissal
  • Lead morning assembly and group activities
  • Monitor mealtimes and rest time
  • Supervise bathroom breaks
  • Facilitate outdoor play
Family Communication:
  • Maintain daily communication via BrightWheel
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences
  • Share photos, observations, and updates
  • Address parent questions and concerns professionally
Documentation & Compliance:
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance logs
  • Complete required forms and reports
  • Keep classroom emergency bag updated
  • Document all incidents and parent notifications
  • Maintain confidential child records
Collaboration:
  • Work cooperatively with assistant teacher
  • Participate in staff meetings and training
  • Share resources and best practices
  • Support program goals and mission
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of preschool child development (ages 2.5-5)
  • Classroom management skills
  • Patience, warmth, and genuine care for children
  • Clear communication with children and adults
  • Creativity in lesson planning
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Basic technology skills (BrightWheel, Google apps)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • Sit on floor and at child-sized furniture for extended periods
  • Stand, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel throughout the day
  • Visual and auditory acuity to supervise children
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergencies
WORKING CONDITIONS
