Job Description
Germantown Friends School is seeking a combined physical education teacher and Early Childhood classroom floater teacher at our Center City location for the 2026-27 academic year. The ideal candidate is someone who supports our school's mission, including its commitment to Quaker values in all aspects of teaching, learning, and connecting, someone who has the ability to teach preschool and pre-kindergarten in physical education while assisting within the classroom throughout the day. PE classes are 30 minutes long and encompass approximately three hours of teaching per week. Applicants should illustrate competencies in teaching various physical activities, including introduction to skills and general physical activity, while creating a positive learning environment. Beyond physical education, the candidate will be responsible for facilitating developmentally appropriate activities that intentionally stimulate language, promote social-emotional skills, encourage fine/gross motor development, and build community. Classroom Floater Teachers also lead Extended Day programming after school. Other Aspects of the position include: Facilitates theme-based curriculum that includes art, science, yoga/mindfulness, and cooking. Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to varying needs, interests, and abilities Fosters exploratory learning through play as an extension of the learning throughout the day. Creates schedules and routines to ensure children experience stimulation, exploratory playtime, physical activity, and downtime. Encourages students to be more independent by gently challenging their capabilities while nurturing their self-esteem. Gives extra support to children who might benefit from behavioral intervention and reminders. Creates a sense of community with all the children in the EC. Is flexible in meeting group and individual needs of the children in the EC. Effectively and positively communicates with co-workers. Participates in professional development to further enrich and challenge teaching methods. Promotes healthy working relationships within the classroom.
Physical requirements:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require lifting, carrying, pushing, and or pulling over 10 lbs. The position involves frequent movement from standing to sitting on small chairs and the floor, as well as walking around campus and the city.
