Join our highly qualified early childhood education team at the Office of Children, Youth, and Learning, a department of the Town of Cumberland!

Town of Cumberland Job Title:
Early Childhood Substitute Teacher Assistant Reports to :
OCYL Early Childhood Education Coordinator, Lori Beauregard Hours:
Part-time, as needed, Monday
  • Friday for Literacy and Number Sense classes in the mornings, and/or seasonal, afternoon lunch and/or classes until 1:30 pm.
Examples:
Summer (July 6-31): 8:30 AM
  • 11:30 AM. School Year, 8:45 am
  • 11:45 AM or 9 AM
  • 12 PM, lunch coverage 11:30 am
  • 12:15 pm, and/or afternoon class from 12:30 pm
  • 1:30 pm.
Wages:
  • Morning Literacy & Number Sense classes: $81.00 per class
  • Afternoon seasonal classes: $40.50 per class
Lunch Facilitator:
$35.00 per lunch
Job Description:
Support a lead teacher in a classroom setting with children ages 3-4 or 4-5. Substitutes embody our early childhood philosophy: OCYL's unique early childhood classes are joyful, dynamic, skills-based, and developmentally appropriate, with play as a key ingredient for learning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Literacy, Number Sense & Seasonal Classes:
  • Help set up classroom centers, snacks, and materials for class before and during classes.
  • Supervise students and attendance at drop-off and pick-up.
  • Help students and late-comers transition to class.
  • Participate and redirect students during circle time or other group activity.
  • Actively engage with students during the entire class, redirecting behavior as needed.
  • Communicate continually with the Lead Teacher to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and take over the class if the Lead Teacher leaves the room.
  • Know where every child is in the classroom, bathroom, lunch area, when transitioning, and during dismissal.
  • Clean tables, put the classroom back in order, gather materials for the next day, stack chairs, and sweep or vacuum when necessary.
Lunch Facilitation:
  • Supervise students in the bathroom before lunch.
  • Facilitate a healthy approach to eating and healthy habits.
  • Transition students to the next teacher.
  • More details upon orientation.

  • Demonstrate our philosophy: joyful, supportive & dynamic interaction with children.
  • Support all children during self-guided discovery, construction of knowledge and development of skills.
  • Support each child's individual development of language, cognition, social/emotional, and motor skills.
  • Responsible for supporting a safe and nurturing environment.
  • Nurture each child's potential through positive, developmentally appropriate interactions that promote self-confidence and motivation to learn.
  • Professionalism in the classroom with students, teachers, administration, and during family interactions.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
Teacher Assistant Certification from a state-approved program or Early Childhood Teacher Certification Early Childhood classroom experience Legal authorization to work in the United States Submit an approved background check Reliable transportation.
