The Mayor's Office of Children, Youth and Learning Cumberland, RI Job Details Part-time $40 an hour 2 hours ago Qualifications Parent communication Visual art supplies Teaching arts Safe environment creation Bachelor's degree in visual arts Preschool teaching Teaching visual art Classroom Teaching Early Childhood Education Full Job Description This is a part-time seasonal position, one day a week, teaching in the Early Childhood Program at the Office of Children, Youth & Learning (OCYL), an educational center and department of the Town of Cumberland during the school year.
Position Summary:
Become a member of our dedicated part-time early childhood teaching team! The Process Art Teacher will lead process-oriented art experiences, providing young children with opportunity for creativity & flexibility using new materials and tools during each class. These art classes focus on the process of creating art, not the finished product, and most importantly, for fun! Teach 2 classes on Fridays during the school year beginning in October. Adult/Child Class for ages 2-3 from 10-10:45 AM and Preschoolers ages 4-5 from 12:15-1:15 PM. Each season is a series of 7 to 8 classes. Additional opportunities include Substitute Teacher Assistant shifts for early childhood literacy and number sense classes and/or art classes for Kindergarten - Grade 9 in our afterschool program.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Use the provided curriculum and create new lessons as needed.
  • Submit materials requests to the Coordinator in advance each season.
  • Gather materials and set up each room for class each week (2 different classrooms).
  • Lead effective, developmentally appropriate lessons for each age group.
  • Actively engage with students during the entire class, redirecting behavior as needed.
  • Maintain ongoing communication and meet regularly with the Coordinator to ensure effective lesson plans, safety, and well-being of all students.
  • Greet and record attendance at drop-off, and release at pick-up.
  • Communicate positively with parents/guardians and/or other adults attending class or picking up children.
  • Clean tables & chairs, put the classroom back in order, sweep or vacuum when necessary.

  • Support all children during self-guided discovery, construction of knowledge, and development of skills.
  • Support each child's individual development of language, cognition, social/emotional, and gross/fine motor skills.
  • Nurture each child's potential through positive, developmentally appropriate interactions that promote self-confidence and motivation to learn.
  • Maintain professionalism with students, teachers, administration, and during family interactions.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
BA in Art, Art Education, OR Early Childhood Teacher Certification with a background in art. Will consider Art Ed college students in junior or senior year with experience. Knowledge of RIELDS is beneficial. 1-2 years of Early Childhood classroom experience preferred Experience with a variety of visual art materials appropriate for children Legal authorization to work in the United States An approved background check/fingerprinting Reliable transportation How to apply: Individuals seeking consideration for this position should send a cover letter, resume and applicable certifications.
